This may have been posted before but my question is can I move from 5w30 dino to synthetic. I've got 87,000 on my 06' M35X. Infiniti has always changed the oil and I had asked years ago about going to synthetic and they don't recommend it. Is this a bunch of crap or are they telling me you don't look for problems. Forum thoughts.

I foresee no problems. Question is, why are you considering the switch?

There were a few V8 guys who said that they had more oil consumption with synthetic vs dino oil IIRC.

Seems like it was mostly the '03-'04 guys, but you wonder about intervals on oil changes, quality of their filters, if other maintenance/engine items weren't properly taken care or in a timely fashion, etc.

I see no problem with it.

Personally, I run a product called AutoRx before switching. I make sure to run it at the beginning of owning any used vehicle (did it on my '99 Maxima, '07 M35x and my current '11 M56x). Only one application is needed. I've never had issues.

I'll probably will stay with conventional oil. I don't put a lot of miles on the M and in most cases take the car in for oil changes much before the 3250 mile marker based on a timeline. The car runs great so I guess I won't mess with success. Thanks for comments.

I agree with you. If you have no issues with the performance or mechanicals, why bother to change. You change your oil / filter well before the end of it's life (like me) and that, if I'm honest is probably the best preventive medicine for your engine. My dealer provides a mix of reg / synthetic but since i have always used Mobil-1 I bring my own oil. They do the change, provide the filter, replace the pan bolt washer, clean the interior, wash and dry the exterior and charge me $30 whilst I sip a free cuppa tea and much on a free protein bar in the lounge. They usually have something good on the telly like home renovations, etc. Not a bad way to spend an hour before I drive to the office.

In agreement. I ran the cheap $16/gal Mobil oil from walmart. When life got hectic and I was driving more and more, I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic (or whichever type is on sale with a few goodies, really) I still do 3 oil changes per year per car... it's just that I wanted to extend the mileage between getting under there.

Minimal oil consumption with both oils for me. Again, for me it was just to avoid an oil change every 2 months.

If you change often (like you do), then almost any decent dino oil will be perfectly fine! :yesnod

Consider using a good dino 5W30 (depending on the area you are in) with some additives, if cost is an issue. Examples: Castrol GTX, Quaker State, Pennzoil, etc.

FWIW, I started using Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-40 from about 10k miles on in my 2003 M45 with an interval of 3750 miles for changes.

Now that I am over 204k miles, I tend to let it go a little longer (like 5k miles or so).

I do the same. :yesnod In fact, it is at the dealer for this change at the moment.

Unfortunately, more work is being done too ... thermostat failed (failing?) and engine heated up last Sunday night, but not dangerously so. I turned the car off before it damaged anything. Drove next morning perfectly fine to the dealer.
