Hello All, I was hoping I could get advice on whether or not to switch to Mobil 1/ Red Line/ Royal Jelly... or stay with high quality conventional oil. I own an 04' with 30,000 miles. It is a Infiniti Certified Preowned with the additional Elite Warranty as well. The service manager here in Sarasota, Fl (Coast Infiniti) told me I had to many miles to recommend the switch. I have heard all the jazz about the VK45 being prone to consumption/burning. I have also heard the rumors of switching to synthetic causing oil seals to be prone to leaking if you switch later in a car's life. However, I thought the new formulations of Synthetics had all but eliminated this. For what it is worth, I have only used Mobil 1 in all of my previous cars (new or used). I also check my fluids religiously as well. By the way, Happy Easter to those inclined. Thanks for any advice.CheersMark

Hi, Mark.

I would recommend switching to a synthetic, certainly after a reasonable break-in period (if you believe in this) with dino oil - say around 10k miles or so. Since you have used Mobil 1 before, you should stick with it, I would think, but any of the good synthetics will do well!

For example, I use Mobil 1 0W-40 in my car and am perfectly happy with that. I add 1/4 to 1/3 qt (sometimes 1/2 qt) every 1750 miles (halfway between my oil change period) and the expense is minor, relatively speaking, to every other expense of operating the car.

Again, as our resident experts also say, it is far more important to do regular oil changes - no more than 3750 miles apart - rather than worry about which oil per se. If you use a good dino oil (like Castrol GTX 5W-30 for example) and change every 3k miles, that would be just fine too!
