I'm looking for a device that will let me easily switch between two audio devices. I have a tape adapter which I want to use for XM and a CD-MP3 player. Is there something out there that will fit in a DIN slot, or is there a discreet switch I can use?

wait, what are you trying to do?

What two devices are you trying to switch between, and what are their connections?

One MP3 player.One XM tuner.

Input method is a single tape adapter. I need a simple switch.

Hmmm...

Hmm... Maybe a bi pole switch would work? You don't want to leave them both openly connected while only one is playing, this might cause problems on th eoutput of the devices.

A bi pole switch would have a common ground, but switch the positive(signal) between the two. You can find a simple, but small one at rat shack

Any double pole double throw (DPDT) switch will do so long as you are comfortable with some wiring. You can leave the grounds grounded. Go to radio shack and pick up a switch, three headphone jacks, cables to match, and you're good. I'm sure myself or someone can draw a diagram if you end up needing it.

You can do this the easier way!

Go to radio shack and get a splitter... you can have both plugged in at the same time, no need for a switch! its how I have 2 sets of speakers plugged into my computer thru one port.

THe problem is that you may over load the output section of the device that isn't running.

I'd prefer to completely seperate hte two via a DPDT switch

It depends a lot on the design of the components involved. PMQ is quite right, though. It's best to do it properly. It's like replacing a headgasket after overheating without checking the deck and head for straightness. People do it, but that doesn't mean people should do it.

Are you talking about the computer setup? If so, this is completely different.

WIth the computer setup you are just spiltting th eoutput from the sound card to go to two sets of speakers.

To compare it to what jesda wants, it'd be like spiltting his existing tape adaptor so he could play the same source in two HUs.

Get it?

Ok, so your saying you may overload the tape thingy? I can dig that, however woudlnt you say that it would probably be OK as long as you kept the one not in use off?

NO, the tape deck would be fine.

What i'm saying that you may overload the device that is not running.

Ex: YOu have the sat radio on and you're listening to it, you have the CD/MP3 player off. You may damage the CD/MP3 player because it is not designed to receive current, only output it.
