to start it off, i bought my 240 3 years ago, its an auto, i was looking for a stick but couldnt find one and plus i needed a car. now everything was working back then until...it saw its first winter, the problem was, when the engine is not on its operating temperature, the digital speedometer doesnt work, and also when i turn on my lights ( i do a lot of early morning driving) the whole cluster doesnt light up, but everything else like the slush box and the hvac, also it gives me a check engine light (cuz the odo doesnt work when the speedo is off). it wasnt much of a concern back then cuz when the engine gets to operating temp, it comes back on...i get speedo and the whole cluster...now after a year, the whole clust just failed...or at least the lights, cuz the LED's for the seatbelt, oil and others still work, just the lights and the speedo are not working...its just annoying that you dont know what speed you're going, and also not knowing when to change oil except when i see black and dirty oil...did any1 ever had this problem? thanks for the info

on the other hand, i do have a question for you guys, does anybody know who does a transmission swap by the bay area, CA? cuz frankly, im really tired of the auto... thanks again guys

do a search on hud or digital dash there is tons of posts on it. but it is most likely the control unit has an open curcuit internally. probably a soldier joint problem. pretty common.

thanks, but when i started searching for "clusters" "digital dash" and digital speedometer, no thread was coming up that has the same problem...also, i was just reading a chilton repair manual, and it said and i quote "If equipped with a digital speedometer, the entier cluster assembly must be replaced if the speedometer is faulty" and im like really?! thats freakin expensive!!! and i was just looking at nissan-parts-dealer.com and it said head-up-display and its like $176.33, what does that mean? so i can just replace the hud? or is that the whole cluster? thanks again...

you need to inspect the solder joints on the circuit board for the input connector to either the control unit or the cluster it self. most likely the control unit is your problem.

I have a HUD as well and i didn't have the same problems butmy spedo didn't work. So i sent it to a place in Richmond VA.I forgot what it was called but for $200 they will fix the problem and give you a gaurantee.

bump!!! ok, NISTECH, i asked this question last year and it was cold so i wasnt able to get on it till today....now ive been reading up and down on all the threads about the "non-working speedos" now i came up with either its the radio that burned out the TCM? (is that right? its the small white box in the kick panel on the drivers side) well i took it out and pulled the circuit board, well it looks fine.... i might still go to the junkyard and get a new one, now next stop was the speedo input connector behind the speedo itself, i opened up the dash, pulled the cluster out, looked at the printed circuit board and it looks like new....no cracks or anything, however i did find one solder mound that has a hole in it but still have a good contact with the wire (should i resolder that?)...now i went ahead and pulled out the speedo itself and along came with the input connectors in the back, i looked at it and it seems fine, but one thing is bothering me, all the connections have brown stuff around the mound...is that the burn out? should i resolder that? (im not really sure what a burn out looks like so pardon me...) also you mentioned its either the control unit input connector or the cluster itself, now where is this control unit you're talking about? i got my whole car's driver side almost parted out....thanks for any input

btw, off topic, my hood hinge just snapped...well the driver's side, is it advisable to replace both? or should i just get one? thanks
