I have searched high and low for an answer to my problem (even used the big flashing red search button on the top right of the page) but I haven't been able to find a solution. It all started when the speedometer and cluster lights wouldn't work when it is cold. The gauges (tach, fuel, temp, etc) did work but the speedo and HUD wouldn't until it warmed up so I followed the very nice troubleshooting and repair guide on replacing the bad capacitor on the speedo unit that Aaron Longenecker came up with and replaced the cap with a new one. Now, the speedometer works as it should but the cluster backlights do not work. The dimmer works on the HUD as well as the climate controls and the TCU is good as well as all the fuses. The lights do work, I used a power supply on the bench and they all work and, when installed in the car with the headlights on, I can ground the wire going to the speedo unit to body ground and the lights come on. With that wire jumpered to ground the dimmer still controls the brightness of the HUD and the climate controls but has no affect on the cluster backlights.
I am thinking I have only fixed half of the problem by replacing the bad capacitor or possibly created another with a shoddy solder job or something. Have any of you guys ever ran into this issue and found a cure?
Also, is Aaron Longenecker still hanging out on here under an alias of some kind? I would love to speak with him since it appears he is proficient with troubleshooting this particular PC board.
Thanks in advance!
