My stock clutch is going, so I think I'm gonna get an ACT street disc. I want to save money by installing it myself, but I don't have much experience working on cars. All I have is a craftsman 151 piece mechanics set, a jack, and 2 jackstands. A friend of mine has an air compressor, bunch of air tools, a torque wrench, and some ramps, and he's willing to help. Think its possible for us to pull the old clutch and install a new one in one day?

The only hard part about dropping the transmission is getting to the top bolt at 12 o'clock on the transmission housing. Other than that it is pretty straightforward and not hard IMO.

Get a bunch of wobble extensions though, as I can't see being able to do it without them.

Here's a tip, with the engine mounts bolted down, jack up the front of the engine to gain clearance with the topmost bolt. Should make things alot easier for you(it took me a while to figure this one out).

If you do only have one day, start VERY early and plan to go until night. Also plan to possibly crash at his place for the night and finish up in the morning if you run into any hitches. This isn't a very easy thing to do. Took me 2 leisurely nights to drop my transmission(this isn't my daily driver), so 1 day is doable, but not guaranteed.

My 2 cents on it.

BTW - with the engine out of the car you can drop the transmission in about 5 mins. I was so happy when I could do that on my SR20DET engine instead of fighting with the damn KA transmission for hours on end!

Ha..that was succinct. Where are you in chicagoland? I'm on the southwest side and my friend is in broadview. Haev you done your clutch? Any useful tips? I'd appreciate it, especially since you're in the area. Email me at [email protected] if you'd rather not post. Thanks!

Well, sounds good. I could do this when I'm at school because I don't really need to drive anywhere, but I don't have tons of tools or car people to help there. By wobble extensions do you mean those flexible socket extensions?

Wobble extensions have a curved end that the socket fits on. This allows the socket to rotate ~16* in all directions from the centerline of the extension. I had to use about 2-3 put together to get at the top bolt and finally break it free. Jacking up the front of the engine gives you about 1/2" more clearance to play with, so that helps alot. It was pretty hard getting the transmission off the input shaft while underneath the car. Make sure you have at least two jacks to support it and at least one helper to spot it.

thats a good idea actually, share manpower/tools/ideas. Yep, my clutch is sad, sometimes it takes a few seconds to really engage so its like driving an auto transmission :)
