im planning on getting a 91 240sx and plan on putting a redtop sr20det. how hard is this swap? is it comparable to a b16 swap? sport compact car makes it sound easy, but i'd like to hear from some other people before i decide to do it with a buddy of mine. thanks!!!

putting the motor in is pretty "easy", its the wiring thats going to cause you a problem. I wouldnt call putting a motor swap in "easy" though.

the actual installation of the motor is not difficult, but the wiring is time consuming.

make sure you have everything you need first...

You may want to follow my example...

Heavythrottle will convert your harness for you, buy the motor, and install it on your day off (takes a day), and them send out your harnes to get it taken care of... While your waiting for the harness, plug the vacuum lines, clean the motor, install new fuel pump and other goodies.

when the harness comes in, plug it up and you should be good to go.

if your harness is cut, which it usually is in two places, can you fix it?

You can completely install the engine without converting the harness, but you have to stretch it all over the place, sloppily. It isnt very hard to extend what needs to be extended, it just takes a lot of time. If you buy a front clip you can just look at the way they have it rigged up, then flip it for a left hand drive and stretch that sucka. Then again it wouldnt be pretty and would get in the way... go figure! Whats good about the 91 is you dont got to mess with converting some sohc items to dohc its already there. (see my question about the gauge pod? somebody?!?) Get a front clip its easier!

the hardest part of the swap is remembering that the dash plug wires need to be longer then you think. the sr harness has very little extra wire. but you will need a lot more then that to have it fit perfect. i don't know how many times i've done the swap and went to plug the dash harness in and it wasn't long enough!

also, the heater hoses are tricky the first time around.shaun

you have to extend the dash wires 2? Seems to me like wire extending is pretty easy, just time consuming. What did you use to extend the heater hoses, did u use the 'extra' ka ones or did u just buy more tubing and splice em together?

drill a hole? uhh... i think your supposed to connect the heater piping to the proper place where the ka's goes. The master cyl. and all the other lines are on the other side i dont see a place to stuff the heater hose...

Well extending the wires isn't a tough. "remembering" to do it each swap is what i have trouble with!i don't thinkjust drilling holes on the driver's side would help things:)i can see some guy now doing this and have 210 degree water pour onto his legs when gets in and the hoses aren't connected to the heater core! heheheas far as tips go for doing the swap, take the ka out with the transmission and ****er still attached. install the sr the same way. it will fit thru the trans tunnel, i swear. before putting the sr in, remove the o2 housing bolted to the turbo. this is if you are doing it yourself. if you have someone to watch and make sure it clears the steering, you don't need to.

so what did u use to extend ur heater hoses? I have the use of a cherry picker and car lift so it might be easier for me to do the 2 part engine then transmission installation instead of tilting it in there. The benefits i assume of that is just to save time...

i buy some various bends and connectors to do the heater hose. its easier to put it in as one unit no matter what tools you have. you tilt it in and thats it. done. no shoving the splin through the clutch while holding the 50lb transmission. trust me. just have the car 12 inches off the ground, pick up the motor/transmission and set it in and line up the two motor mounts.shaun

heh still trying to solve my heater hose problem. Did you just buy those at a hardware store? I cant find any on the internet for my car... Ok ill try the transmission and engine at the same time, i guess i wont have to buy the clutch alignment tool afterall. Did you use your stock engine mounts or did you go nismo?

stock motor mounts. btw, the sr heater hoses are a little bigger in diameter. get go the auto store and get adapters to connect the bigger hose the smaller.

so is there any harm in making the heater hose too long? I dont know if connecting the Sr's with the ka's without cutting would be too long for it to handle. Any of you guys keep the AC?
