I was reading the technical articles and came across this:

"You MUST use either a fluid designed for LSD (royal purple or Redline) or add the LSD additive (this additive contains the silicone I mentioned earlier that heats up to make the differential lock up)."

Now I have not taken one of the VLSD differentials apart, but I have read that the actual limited-slip unit is sealed unit and no special fluid is needed. If this is true, somebody needs to edit the articles.

The additive is for gear wear to prevent lockup on the ring and pinion teeth IIRC.

"You should only use conventional GL-4 80w-90. I use Nissan brand, because It's cheap, quality, easy to find and meets all of the requirements. Change it every time you change your oil. Do not use Redline, Royal purple, or Motul. Do not use any LSD additive."

The quote from this thread is very mis-leading also! Nissan actually recommends GL-5 instead of GL-4 for their differentials. IIRC GL-5 has some extra high pressure additives which is good for reducing gear wear, but this increase of these additives increase synchro wear. Since, you do not have any synchros in your differential, GL-5 will work just fine. Why the heck would he not recommend a quality sythetic, besides the potential for leaks? Perhaps if he ran a synthetic, he would not have to change it so often!
