Ok ladies here's the scoop,

The Project: 1989 s13: I had an open diff, I bought a used VLSD.

The Problem: My VLSD has a seized fill and overflow plug, tried all the tricks to get it free, but all it wants to do is strip.

The Question: Can I simply swap the differential plates? If so, what issues will arise from the swap?

Additional Info: The plate on the open diff, seems to mate fine with the VLSD. I hear no grinding, so it seems to have clearence. The open diff plate has far less heat sinks, and less room for fluids then the VLSD endplate. The open diff has over flow and fill plugs in totally different locations then the other.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok Chris here's the thing... I know, I can do it, it fits, it lines up, but knowing that the VLSDs are God awful when they get heated up, and the fact that adding this endplate may reduce fluid circulation and effectiveness, I need to know... it's not like this car is driven like a sissy...

the extra fluid capacity wont help much. i have seen enough of them to think that the lsd plate is not much bigger. the silicone is just gonna get hot if you drive hard no matter what. i would do it myself without a doubt. use some nice fluid like redline shockproof, mobil one, or valvoline synpower. that will keep the heat down. i have checked that for sure(not on a nissan but still).

Ok then,

Answer: Cons: Less fluid, heats up faster, less clearence

Pros: Less parasitic drag from fluid, change fluids more often

If anyone else cares to add.. fell free to do so...

There isn't much point... anyways it's already cleaned, lubed, gasketed and bolted up... now putting it back in with one person should be fun...
