ok, i have been doing alot of research on differentials and i have learned alot... but some things i have read/heard have me a little confused.

i know the main types of differentials:

open-diff. (comes on most 240s ? )LSD (1-way, 1.5-way, 2-way, VLSD)posi-trac

i plan on getting an s13 in the future and i am going to probably get an LSD. but with LSDs:

(1)if you were to just rev it up and sidestep the clutch would both wheels spin?

(2)about how much would it cost for parts and labor to have an LSD installed?

(3) i have heard that 1.5-way LSDs are better for drifting and i have heard the same about 2-way, is it a matter of preference?

(4) since 2-way LSDs lock on accel. and de-accel. wouldn't that be like posi-trac?

anyway, if anyone can clear this up for me it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance.

The last quote I heard for a Phantom Grip was roughly 300-380 parts and about 1000$ labor, and about 900$-1200$ for a Quaife, roughly the same labor. I've had personal experience with neither but I have seen catastropic transmission kabooms during several PG application, I have only heard of similar happening with a poorly installed Quaife.

From what friends of mine have told me, it's down to preference on the 1.5 or 2 for drifting

Side step the clutch as in flat shifting?

1) if you have any type of LSD and you rev it up and drop the clutch then yes both wheels should spin2) not sure3) 1.5way are better for grip because it isnt fully locked while braking for a corner(or decelerating) 2 way is better for drift, but either one can be used anywhere, it just takes a little getting used to.4)positrac is just another name for a limited slip differential. stands for positive traction.if you want a locked diff for cheap, weld your diff. or have someone else do it. if done right it will last a long time, and required FAR less mantience compared to clutch type lsd's.

I'm not sure how much of my previous knowledge applies in this situation, but I'm sure it's mostly cross compatible.

Weld that differential. You start spinning your wheels and don't grab traction, you're running a good chance of distructionating your differential. The pin should be flush, no bulges. You will still have an "open" differential but you run less chance of distructionation due to spider gears going boom.

This mate of mine has gone through 3? Phantom grips. I've yet to hear of anyone I know distructionating whilst using a Quaife.
