Mitsubishi ~ 8 pinion gear teeth

Vs

Hitachi ~ 9 pinion gear teeth

besides the slight physical differences, are they interchangeable?

would the gear teeth make a difference?

autozone only lists the Hitachi model; i guess which replaces the mitsubishi one?!?

here are the following 2 listings that brought up my curiosity:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nissan-240SX-2- ... 7675.l2557

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NISSAN-240SX-2- ... 27cdb6129a

rockauto.com also has the 2 different types listed

to add, here's what someone from TX stated when he got his from Advance Auto Parts
Replacement for original on my '89 Nissan 240SX that went out at 204,000 miles. This is a rebuilt nissan part.

Make sure to take your 240SX starter in to compare. Nissan used Mitsubishi and Hitachi starters and there is a slight difference.

This replacement replaced my Hitachi with good results. Starter did not come with new bolts and the solenoid positive cable nuts were thin and weak. overall, an average replacement starter. We will see if it lasts half as long as the original.

looking at the noses of these 2 different types, i'm guessing one model is for auto trans and the other is for a manual trans?!?

i'll yank mine's off in the spring since this car can't fit my 3 kids & their cousins... going to be my 3~season commuter beater for the rest of it's life

There is a difference, I just can't remember if it AT vs MT or if its SOHC vs DOHC.

The diff should be between AT and MT. I was talking with some local 240 guys a week or two ago, and I mentioned getting a SOHC starter to rebuild my SR starter, and was told that the starters are the same between SOHC and DOHC. Can't back that up, but those guys know KAs a lot better than me.

that's what lead me to that inquiry...

when people do auto-to-manual trans conversions, do they take that into account? hmm...
