First off I am not talking about the rear bumper protector you can buy for ~$40 and stick on.

Has anyone added some kind of bumper protector to where the bumper can be hit by other cars?

I am very worried about this because I live in the city and have to park on the street. You wouldn't believe the condition of my last car back bumper!

If anyone has added something could you post some pics?

Ebay has a few for sale, here's one model but I noticed a couple others too:

I can appreciate what you are saying. I have a friend who lives in New York City> He purchased a brand new Audi 8 months ago. I saw it last weekend and it looks like someone took a ball-peen hammer to the rear bumper. When I asked about it he said it was considered normal city wear and tear. Sorry... it was WAY TOO MUCH damage for me,... it would make me nuts!

One of these bumper guards (as found on eBay) might do the trick for the occasional psycho parallel parker... but its doubtful they would offer any real protection much above a 5 mph impact. (if that) Looks like they might be more for show.

Thanks guys,

that bumper protector looks ugly to me, besides using something like the bumper bully I think I'm screwed

Great idea. I wonder if anyone makes a phony one......like made of plastic or something? I would buy it. Those things( the real ones) scare me to death.

I saw one like posted above here in San Francisco last night on a Toyota Highlander. It was a functional one, which did look pretty good. After visiting a big city like SF where parking is so packed, I can definitely see the want for one of these. Not to mention some a$$ scraped into my rear bumper which I had repainted less than a month ago...

Keep one thing in mind here:

The reason the bumper is made of plastic and foam is to soften impacts. It's part of an overall system to absorb energy during an impact and protect the occupants inside the vehicle. By hanging a large metal bar or anything else off the back, you may be negating some of these benefits.

I have to agree with Elton, anything more than a light bump will likely crush the unsupported ends of the bar into the bumper anyway. You may also end up with expensive body/frame damage instead of just a scratched bumper.

FYI: In the UK they have banned bull bars of any kind after 2006 or so. Part of this is due to pedestrian accidents. Automakers are going to great lengths to make crush zones in hoods an bumpers to lessen the impact during a pedestrian accident. With a bull bar, they have no chance.
