Greetings!

I used to own a '93 j30. I finally sold it after the transmission went out again with 215,000 miles.I miss it SO BAD, I'm looking into getting another one. I'm now considering getting a '95 J30T that is on sale online. From what I can see, it looks like the '95 has extra speakers on the A pillar and heated seats (when compared to the '93).I also know the J30t has HICAS, but I read somewhere it was discontinued at a certain year (I'm hoping the '95 still has HICAS).Anyway, any extra info on the differences (and improvements) between these two models would be appreciated.

Thanks!

WElcome!

215k on a transmission is good, but the record here is 250k on the original transmission. Thats almost unheard of in the J30 world!!

HICAS was discontinued in 1994, so the 95 wont have that... I know it was for the Q, so id assume the J30 wouldnt have it either....

I know they got a 100k (maybe 120k) kevlar timing belt, as opposed to the 60k from the 93 and 94..... Heated seats were standard.....

Other than that its the pretty much the same car. I know the tail light changed somewhat, but I cant describe whta the change is... sorry

Have you considered a Q45 (90-96). Also, wehre are you located?

elwesso,

Thanks for the reply.Actually, my transmission broke down twice. I bought the '93 used with 120,000 miles. The transmission went out at 195,000 then again at 215,000. It was then when I found that they need "special care".

It sounds like I might bypass the '95 J30t and go with a '93 J30t instead.I don't need heated seats since I live by San Antonio, TX.Plus, the 93 has HICAS. I've never driven a car w/4 wheel steering, but I read that it's a pleasure to drive.

I really haven’t considered a Q45 because I figure they retail at a higher price and the gas mileage is worse than the J30. Other than that, I think that those are beautiful cars.BTW, do they have any major transmission issues? And, how long do those V8s last? I'm assuming they're RWD! Just asking incase I decide to jump to the Q!

The HICAS only came on the "T" model in the 93 and 94s. Small gremlins were pretty much worked out by 95. Lumbar support and auto dimming rear view mirror also added. All repacement timing belts were of the 105k mile kevlar.

Was your replacement transmission an OEM unit? Trsnsmissions on both J and Q require extra TLC especially in hot climates. San Atone would certainly qualify for that.

Good to hear that you got 195k out of the original with no TLC in south Texas.

Mike,

The transmission was rebuilt by a local shop. Of course, it went bad just after the warranty expired (I lost all gears). I know better now though.Looks like my plan is to get a '93 or '94 J30T with low miles since I can do without the extras the '95-'97s provide.Plus, I figure that I can put in a Kevlar belt in a 93-94. Please, tell me if I'm wrong!

Benz..

I think you should really look into a Q.. The epitome of infinti engineering... you can pick up a 94 for around 5-7k. I got my 94 for 5500!!! The only place youll see a decrease in gas mileage is in the city, im pulling off about 14mpg of hard, shortrip, manyredline, city driving..... :D I dont consider that unreasonable, i think 16mpg would be easily attainable...

They both have their transmission issue, but the Q transmission on the 94s with a trnany cooler cna easily go 150-200k....

There have been many bad experiences with non OEM transmission rehabs described over the years. If a 93-4 has over 60k miles it probably had the new kevlar belt installed.

I get about 21.5 mpg in mixed driving with the crappy methanol diluted gas in these parts. Note: the J is at least 400 lbs heavier than the Maxima and according to Eswift the ECU fuel mapping on the VG30DE is rich to avoid detonation at all costs.

I was just looking at some pics of a '95 Q. It looks like the engine is mounted for FWD! Please tell me they're RWD!

It's good to find out they're RWD! Since elwesso has got me to consider into looking for a Q45, I've spotted a '97 on ebay that just has me drooling! (Item number: 2482611574).Too bad it's not in Texas. I'd might have paid the "Buy it now" price!

The second-generation Q will have different driving dynamics from a J30. A J30, from my experiences driving one, is like a four-door sports car. Its very tight and responsive, even if it isnt screaming fast.

The 97+ Q is a full size touring sedan, and has a slight tendency to float and bob and weave a bit (dont worry, it doesnt float like a Buick Park Avenue). The 90-96Q outhandles the 97-01 model years significantly, based on performance data and the observations of owners.

While the spring rate seems a little softer on the FY33, the everyday handling vis a vis a G50 is not that different. One must remember that all FY33 came with a rear anti-sway bar and a front strut tower brace, whereas only t and a models (and earlier HICAS models) of the G50 had anti-sway bars in the rear. No G50 came stock with a front strut tower brace.

JDM FY33 had rear tower braces available to them.
