I have been trying to do some research on different coilovers for my 97 q45. I have found some of the normal coilovers such as the Junction Produce and JIC coilovers.

While on the JP site, i think it says the spring rate is 14k. I am guessing thats 14 kilograms, but is that enough? I am by no means an expert on suspension systems nor can I read Japanese, but shouldn't the spring rate be higher than that? Does anyone have the spring rate for the JICs or AimGains?

Is there any difference between the y33 and the q45 suspension-wise?

Thanks...

It should be resistance in force per unit of distance traveled initially.

Kg per cm?

Does anyone know what the stock spring rate is?

i would think for a car this heavy, it would need a higher spring rate. I have this mental image of the spring completely compressed with the weight of the Q...

If you don't know the rate of the spring to which you are comparing it, you are just urinating upwind. Look in the FSM.

I looked in the FSM under the suspension section and came up empty. But is the y33 suspension identical? I can always change springs if needed later.

I noticed in the fsm for the 97, the front suspension in the pictures are different than they are in real life, but the FSM says 97, and the other pictures of the car are correct... a little lost

Consider that 90-96 Q use 146 inch pounds on front and the free length of spring is ~~16" and mounted with body weight it compressses ~~8".

That's about 2.6 Kg/cm.

don't worry about what the stock spring rate is.

if the coilover is made for your car then you all set.

BTW the JIC are meant to have a super stiff spring rate even and the lowest pre load and zero damper.

My algernon's (same build house as aimgain and insurance) are very nice, can get a little bumpy on very rough roads but overal very smooth, stable and very resilient. I have it set at low preload on springs and 0 damper on struts. so far so good. I may stiffen up the front damper to 2.

Thanks for all the information...

Well I am actually looking at the Junction Produce Coilovers. They make them for the y33, but not the q45, and so I am concerned if there is any difference- suspension wise- between the two.

The JP coilovers are actually at 10kg/cm in the front and 7kg/cm in the rear. The JICs are 7kg/cm front and rear.

Is this going to be extremely stiff? Would the shock dampening capability be able to make the ride a little softer or is that solely dependant on the spring?

Isn't your Y33 a Q45?

dude dont go with the JICs! i heard so much bad **** about the coilovers on vipstylecars. they said it's a really stiff ride and you'll be bouncing everywhere on dips and bumps. thats why you see a lot of them going on the used japanese auctions. if i were you i should check out insurance-group coilovers. i just bought a set for my 97 q45. i can get them for $1,980+shipping to your door. i'll post pics of them installed when i get the chance. http://www.insurance-group.net...n.htm

You can also do a set of Tein Springs and KYB SR Specials, not quite a coil over but for $300 for the springs and $800 for the shocks it gets you a 2" lowering, handles very well, and would be about 1k cheaper.

I have heard about the bad reputation JIC is getting lately, but arn't the srping rates about the same? Wouldn't that be teh cause of the bouncing? With that being said- the Junction Produce coilovers would be even bouncier at a higher spring rate....

What makes the insurance-group coilovers so different? I am having a hard time choosing? All the sites claim the same benfits... 15 ways dampening adjustments, etc...

I have thought about just lowering springs, but I am not sure if I want to go that route just yet.

But soo far its become quite hard to pick which coilovers.... so far its just a lot of he said she said.....

you cant just judge a product from what it says on their website, you gotta try em to know. i even rode in the homies ride with the latest JIC "VIP" coilovers, and they were the shttiest ride ever. he got rid of them quick. as for the insurance coilovers, i heard a lot of good stuff about them. most people recommended me on getting them on vipstylecars. and the good thing about them is that they send it in fully complete with stock spindles. not like the JIC's, you gotta send in your stock ones and that gives you some down time with no suspension. im trying to pull some pictures right now of someones ride with the insurance's . he claims that the coilovers were close as stock ride and the adjustibility is a amazing. if your so concerned about ride quality, just go air man. thats why im getting the insurances, so later on i could use it with UAS aero sport bags and have the BEST adjustible air suspension.

i would think the jic 7k is too conservative. The bouncing doesnt mean their springs are too soft it just means they havent worked other parts of the design out... I have JIC 8k/6k in my A32 and they ride stiff but the dampening is excellent on my 240sx I run Tanabes with a 7k/5k rate... for a car as big and heavy as the y33 JPs 10k rates might not be nearly as bad as the number suggests

well I can vouch for my algernon coilovers, they are same as insurance and aimgain so this will help other's decide on insurance or aimgain.

so far, so good. 90 percent of the time is is very nice. Not at all bouncy with a very stable feel. 10 percent of the time is really harsh due to road conditions. If the road conditions are very bad then you will definitely feel them.
