I was wondering what the difference is in a V6 and I6. Well I know the basic difference. Block design, But what are theadvantages/disadavantages of a V6? advantages/disadvantages of a I6?

im going to take a guess at this so here goes......i think the I6 flows better, because the air goes in a straight line, so I think it would be more powerful, or able to produce more power. Think of the Skyline and the 300zx. They both produce amazing amounts of power, but I've never heard of a 300zx in the 1000hp numbers.

JUST MY GUESS.

For some reason, an inline engine is more torquey, and more durable... Don't know exactly why, so brighter minds can take it from there.

Had a straight 6 (250 c.i.) in an old Buick that (with a couple mods) pulled damn hard for such a small engine.

not sure about this one so correct me if i am wrong. I heard that the straight six creates less vibration because the pistons only go up and down instead of diagonal like a v6. In theory that sounds like that should be the case. Also if i remember correctly they used lack of vibration as a selling point for boxer engines, where the opposed pistons cancel each other out and creates less vibration.

Boy, are we a pathetic bunch. That's what I get for smoking under the bleachers instead of going to autoshop class.

Hopefully some technical types will chime in soon...:D

hb55047 is right, there is less vibration in an inline 6, correct me if i am wrong but i think the straight 6 is one of the only naturally balanced engines. The same would go for a v12 (basically two straight sixes). I could be wrong though.

Well, one advantage of a V6 is an easier fit in a CAR. Inline 6's are wicked long.... for example the Jeep 4.0 I6... throw a table cloth over that thing and you've got room for 4 at dinner.

In my auto's class were taught that the straight 6 is the most balanced engine short of the v12 of the normal car engines. The Flat engines ruler over all. But the flat engines are so wide that you can't fit it in most cars. Ferrari didn't choose the v12 for nothin'. As far a v engines go to have a good v engine you should be able to divide by 4. So v4 v8 or v12 are better balanced. Inline and flat are by 2's.
