I was never happy with the height of my shift knob even with the racingline sts, so I first shaved some of the shifter shaft down for the new shift knob but that only got rid of maybe a inch and I was looking for something really short like Ive had in some other cars. Finally I got brave and took my entire center console out one day, disassembled the shifter and everything associated with it, cut the shaft in half. I then took some measurements for how low I wanted it to go, cut some of the shaft off and welded everything back together. After I was done I wasnt happy with the stock shift boot so I got a 93 Maxima shift boot that is already alot shorter than ours and installed it. Needless to say it came out about 3 1/2 inches shorter than stock and I couldnt be happier with how it came out.

So far so good. Have about 1200 miles with it the height it is now. Shifts feel exactly the same just shorter and a little easier for some reason. Everything from the placement of the cable linkage was left in the exact same spot, all the welding was done above the forward to rear motion cable, so I dont see any problems in the future as nothing was changed from the linkage down. I also greased up the lower pivot ball and cables while everything was apart with some grease I had for motorcycle sprocket roller bearings. So Im guessing thats why the shift is better and not so stiff. Im working on changing the trans fluid out within the next couple weeks so we will see if the shift gets any better. Im at 7500 miles now and figuring now is as good as a time as any to change it out. Ive got to say this is the first serious fabrication Ive done on this car, but Ive been building race car frames and parts with my dad on his USAC series sprint cars since I was about 10. Happy with the result. Maybe Ill get some time to figure out how to modify something else.
