black is painted, normal, creamy off white color is probably unpainted, as in the paint has stripped / worn off.

If it's not black it's been painted over. The plastic underneath is a yellow color.

if this is the motor you're referring to, it looks like they did a horrible gold spray paint job on it...

I got the same setup from them for $1288 shipped to my door. That is way too high to ask.

One of my motors had a blue Greddy oil filter on it.. it looks almost like the one in the ebay pic.. hard to tell if thats a Greddy tho.The Greddy's smaller than OEM filters.

could be a nippon oil filter...

there are other companies that make light blue oil filters. just because YOU don't know about them doesn't mean they don't exist. its not a good idea to make assumptions of an engine's condition based on what oil filter is on it either IIRC biosehnsucht's motors were both blown right?

Haha yes one had bad valve seals / piston rings, the other (I think the one that had the Greddy filter) had a blown HG

The color looks closer to those Nippon filters, than the Greddy...

Things that are important to me are;

#1-Complete Motor Set-If your missing a few things here and there the cost can rise very quickly. Some parts are also very hard to find. If you can, buy a front clip so you have everything you need.

#2-Compression Test-This is to make sure there arnt any problems with the motor itself.

#3-Clean Slate-Try to find a motor that hasnt been modified already cause they will have a high chance of being mashed on by previous owners. If you really want to be picky, try to find one equiped with an auto trannie cause these motors are almost never pushed hard.

Actually I got a ca18det with the same sparkplug cover, its not painted or atleast the one that came on my motor isnt. The oil cap was gold aswell. I did some reaserch and talked to some shops. Turns out it was only on the luxury version automatic 240s. I think they are call silvia K's. Anyways we put a manual trans and the engine ran nicely. Im not sure if that engine is the same but if you find a qold covered ca with an auto trans Id grab it reall quik. This engine runs strong...224whp baby

silvia K's just is the highest model silvia (not some luxury model). its not really rare. most of the turbo silvia's were K's models with afew Q's turbos thrown in the mix.

k's = kingsq's= queensand there were afew j's = jacks

i don't know if i buy that whole luxury version having gold oil caps and spark plug covers. that sounds like a load of bs to me...

Black didn't have to be popular, it was black to begin with.

where do you get this stuff?

there was only one CA18DET. It came in 88-90 model Silvias and 180sx', and a version of it came in the 200sx in the European model.

viola! there's your TOTAL history of the CA18DET. There were no "luxury" models, there were no special gold trim BS, it was the CA18DET, and that was it. Auto w/ gold trim has 224hp? what the hell? where did you get that? seriously, was it just some shop that had an auto CA18DET w/ ghetto painted gold crap that wanted to sell it to you high 'cause they knew they had crap?

also, especially in the time frame we're speaking, Nissan would never put their most powerfull version of an engine (though there was only ever one version that was turbocharged, it was THE CA18DET) in an AUTOTRAGIC car, ever.
