Aside from the obvious extra displacement...

What did Nissan, Inc. do to get the extra 70 horses out of the VQ35?

They have about the same weight, so there wasn't any weight reduction.

Anyone got a clue/theories?

The 3.5 is a wider engine block, wider bore, but similar stroke and has different heads and different valves and different cam shafts when compared to the 3.3L The lobes on the 3.5 are slightly different so the valve timing is also different.

The intake system is a bit different too with longer intake runners for the 3.5L. Then you get into the computer and they are tuned completely different.

Are you thinking of doing a swap from a 3.3 to a 3.5? There is a better way. Here's the link for the information.

It's a VQ35DE and a VG33E -- two different engines, not just displacement. D denotes DOHC, whereas lack of "D" is a SOHC.

Ahhh, DOHC. Hadn't noticed that part before, though figured it was tuned different.

Thanks for the link Bid-Bird. I will now be obsessing about that project for some years until I have a garage again. Sonofa...

So there's my next question. Anyone ever reprogrammed their VG33? Thought about it, but my main goal is gas mileage at this point since it's a daily driver. I don't want any reduction in power, but any increases provided in my search for better MPG is icing on the cake.

Some other notable differences would be that the VQ has a timing chain vs. the VG's timing belt... also, VQ has individual coil ignition whereas the VG has the classic single distributor.
