Are their major differences between a 92 and 97 KA? I have an extra 92 engine and might decide to build it for my 97, if it would work.. thanks for any info

s13 has an external coil, and s14 has internal. there may be wiring harness issues because of that. i don't know if that makes any other parts different though. i've heard of people using s14 motors in s13's and s13 motors in s14's so it CAN be done.

Yeah, S13's have an external, S14's have the coil inside the distributor...

Arent the S14 KA's also rated at 5 more bhp? 155/160? What is the reason for that I wonder.

Basically, yes.

The head is a different casting (different valve cover bolt pattern) but is otherwise identical.

There is a very minor change in the upper front cover...although they look identical, they are not. If they are swapped, you will leak oil everywhere from right near the distributor. FYI...

The bock is also identical in most respects...

There are no advantages to either block, except maybe the age of the '97 versus the '93.

And the OBD thing...it's brought up EVERY time someone asks about a motor swap (KA --> newer KA, or the opposite)...and it ALL ELECTRICAL.

Just because one came in a car that had OBD-I and it's going into a OBD-II car....since the head and block are basically identical, the ECU and OBD is none-the-wiser.

When you swap, retain the intake and exhaust manifolds with the chassis, and use the same ECU and electronics...doesn't matter which head/block you use. ECU can't tell...
