Diff shims/play

Have any of the you had to custom shim your diff to make sure the mesh on the ring gear was right. I am having a problem with play in my VLSD. I can turn the driveshaft with the car in neutral (and rear tires in the air) and it take a bit of movement before the outside axles start to turn. When driving my car makes a bump/clunk noise when going from on throttle to off throttle. I have checked the driveshaft and all mounts and everything is tight and dosen't have any slack. I can hear the same bumping noise (sounds like it is coming from the diff) when I get under the car and turn the driveshaft just a bit. Basically it bumps and then the outside axles start to turn.

I guess I am trying to figure out if I can just reshim my current diff to correct this or if I need to get a new final drive set and then check the clearances. To add to the mix I might also toss the VLSD and get something else during this whole mix.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Im pretty sure that all our diffs have alot of play in them... mines gots plenty! has about 1/6th to 1/4th turn of play in my open diff... I wonder how much a brand new one has... wonder if they actually gain play as they wear ... hmmm... mine also has clunk but only when the transmission is cold and the syncros dont work well (pops/slams into gear slightly).

I am unsure about the adjustment proceedure... maybe post this up in the nissan mechanic section? NISTECH would def know this one.

Wow that is a lot of play. I think mine has about a 1/16th to 1/8th turn of play and it makes a HUGE clunk when I go from on the throttle to off (like in making shifts). It really dosen't bother me too much as I don't daily drive it, but I just don't want to go to the drag strip and have my diff blow chunks.
