Diff making horrible noise!!

so whenever i accelerate my diff makes this clunking grinding noise! like bad?it doesnt do it when im not on the throttle though...

my drivers sides axle is missing the boot?

also the drivers side output shaft thingy on the diff slides in and out like an 1/8"?but the passenger side doesnt move at all..

any ideas?

is it when you start moving it sounds like a dirbike sound?

And its not a LSD? Sounds like carrier play, shimming, or bearings. Could also be a worn U-Joint thought.

its a welded. it all started when i drove my car with 2 diff size tires no other option and i had to get home

Probably the backlash went out of spec and you have a broken tooth, or wear down from the pinion to the ring gear...... Open it and inspect it, but it sounds like it needs replacement.

is $100 for a new(used) diff and drivers axle a good price?

You did have an option, actually.

You should have swapped a tire with the front instead. You see, in a modern RWD vehicle, the front wheels are not connected together in any way, so you can drive with different sizes in the front without damaging any equipment.

I find it hard to believe that you would weld your diff and then put two different size wheels on the car. Logic would conclude that if you were smart enough to change out a diffy, you would realize that damage was going to happen to your diffy if you mounted different wheels on either side...

Am I wrong here or what?

i wouldnt risk driving it too much. i had a welded go bad and lock up and well.... lets just say forced drifting isnt too fun lol.

If condition is known and good then yes, I'd do it.
