well, i was leaving work and my car wouldn't start so i got a jump from a fellow employee and it fired up after a min or 2. i then started off for campus and the car started to bog terriably and died at an intersection and is now parked at a quiktrip in the getto and i'm afraid for it. the tow truck is coming to take it back to my apartment.... could a dead battery cause this, could it be a bad alternator or something else.....i'd like some input thx

it the fuel pump fuse was blown, the car wouldnt have even started up again. how long did u let the car charge for when u were jumping it. sounds like the alternator is not charging the battery. get a voltmeter and check batt voltage with the car running. should be over 12v.

There are a couple different ways that you can approach this. One being take the alternator off and take it to a parts house to test. I know AutoZone and Advance Auto test these things. You can also take the battery to them for testing but they may need to charge it up first and you might expect to get it back the next day, hopefully. Good or no Good of course is what they will tell you. You might check the water level in your battery and make sure that it fully covers the plates. It might not be holding a charge for this reason. Definately check to make, make sure that your battery terminals are free of corrosion. If so, disconnect them and use either coca-cola to submerge them in a cup full for a few minutes or do this same procedure with warm water and baking soda. Good Luck and hope you find the problem.

It's a good bet it's your alternator. To test it, borrow a friends battery, start it, and take off the positive post of the battery. If the car stays on, then your alternator is fine. Should taking off the positive terminal kill the car, your alternator is bad. Before ripping it out though, I'd probably check my ground wiring and check the positive connection from the alternator. What I did with mine is connected a 2 gauge battery wire directly from my alternator to my battery and that gives me a stable 13.9 volt. Before I stuck that wire there I only got 13.2 volts. Just some pointers.

well, i took off the alternator and it is at a rebuild shop right now. the alternator was definitally gone, it was measuring only 2 volts on the bench. another weird thing though was that where the wire connects to the bolt on the back, not the main plug, i thought this was my ground but was told it wasn't by the shop, they called it something else, but anyway it was almost competel;y melted through. what would make this happen and how can i prevent it in the future??

Check there may be a tear in the intake piping. People overlook this

If you have the stock rubber intake . The one that travels across the front. The rubber boots tend to tear. It was causing my auto to do that. Just an idea
