I just got a 2012 G37x sedan, Im on my 5th fill up with regular, a friend told me that I HAVE to put premium or I will cause engine damage (especially the way I drive), I was under the assumption that it didn't matter, but after this talk with my friend I noticed a bit of a rattling sound when I accelerate quickly, Iv had the car about 3 weeks and to be honest I open it up when ever I have the chance,(on the highway daily to and from work) so my question is could I have messed up the engine already ?

the answer is NO you wont mess your engine up if you drive the car slow and dont really rev the car hard. the engine will retard the timing to make up for the regular gas. which also means you are not getting the 330 bhp when you use regular gas in the g37. If you plan on driving your G37 hard you should be using premium gas. also if you have any issues with your engine and they find out you been using regular gas for extended periods it could void your warranty. As it is stated in your manual that premium gas is required in the G37. (the manual sates that regular gas can be used for SHORT periods)

Telcoman drivers a G35, which does not require premium gas.

@ kmckis, Since I got a reply from telcoman, iv been driving the same way,
I mean I'm not pullin up to red lights and trying to race people
But on the highways/expressways I'm hittin 80-90mph,I'm switching to
anyway Im not gonna f$@k up a brand new car, so in your opinion 91 or 93?
Not all places in bk sell 91, its 87 89 and 93, I have to go a bit out of the way for 91 (which I don't mind at all), I may like to bip around a bit but I keep my cars immaculate.

If 93 is closer then use it. 91 would work but if it's further away then no need to drive to get it.

I noticed my fuel mileage is better with premium over regular. If it over weighs the extra cost of premium I am not sure, but that is the only difference I had noticed with trying regular.

I did a test three years ago when I was at the 84k mile mark using Sunoco 93 octane for one month and about 2000 miles carefully calculating my MPG.
I did the same the following month using 91 octane also for about 2000 miles

In neither test did I see any increase in MPG and went back to regular 87 octane

I've been using regular 87 octane WaWa ever since.

Fillup with premium & regular alternately and you won't feel performance or mpg difference :nono:

I've used almost 7000 gallons of gas since I purchased my G and at a approximately $.30 per gallon saving that comes to a roughly $2100.00 savings. Does it matterif my engine generates 298 hp or 290?
Not to me!
Still runs like new

I've had G37 loaners for a few days at various times and they ran fine on regular also.

Use whatever makes you feel good

91 is the min rating recommended in the manual... here in GA they dont sell 91, just 93, so thats what i use.

you are 100% right for your year of G. if you look at your filler cap cover you will see "premium recommended", but on my filler cap cover you will see "premium required"

Remember that Telco's car is an older model that doesn't require premium. Newer 3.7L engines are designed for higher octane.

Do some research on how an engine works. The higher octane allows the engine to run optimized timing for the longer fuel burn.

Over time, it can damage components due to the way lower octane burns (faster and violent). Think of this hot weather we're having...lower octane fuel will burn easier and could cause damage due to detonation on hot spots in the combustion chamber. Eventually it will cause premature wear.

In a G37 the way you drive it, YES!!
You have already proved it by your statement.

I have put regular in my 05 G35 and it ran fine just as Telcoman says.
However, it's a G35, not a G37 as has been mentioned several times already.
I currently have a 08 G35X that gets only Prem. - RECOMMENDED
I also have a 04 G35 Coupe that also only gets Prem. - REQUIRED

Use Prem. or get a G35 Sedan and use Reg.......THE END....... :yesnod
