Well i've had this spare DE head sitting in my storage unit for a few months... so I decided to put it to use. The head is trashed.. the previous owner spun a rod bearing and kept driving the car.. that pushed alot of metal up into the head and that scratch all of the cam surfaces and journals pretty deep... so instead of spending the money to fix it I used it for practice.

I used an air grinder tool to remove some meat in the ports... on the intake I basically just gasket matched them and removed a little on the inside of the ports. One the exhaust side I removed quite a bit of material and polished it up with some emery cloth. I know you don't want the intake ports polished and smooth... this was just practice. I won't be doing this on my good head.. this is only practice.

That looks awesome, but I have a question.

Why don't you want the intake ports polished and smooth?

from what I have read around on the forums... is that with polish smooth intake ports the fuel will not properly atomize (sp?) and does more harm than good. One of the mechs. at work said thats not really an issue with FI cars since the fuel is being sprayed directly into the ports but others have said it needs to be a bit ruff in there....

Yeah, you want to keep the intake ports no finer than an 80 grit.

Exhaust could be enlarged, but is nice looking. The intake is a little to clean. You need to have a ported but unpolished finished on a MPFI car. It has to have some turbulence to aid in the atomization of fuel.

The real hard part is finding out exactly how deep you can go on the ports before you hit a water jacket. You can weld them up, but typically it will cause the water jacket to be worthless, and cause warpage in the head. So, having a spare head is nice because it will let you know how deep you can go.

Just be sure that you be even on the ports. And when you cut the center section be sure that you make it even and sharp (normally, you would not want it to be sharp, but this will create some degree of turbulence).

The money for this comes from the information that the people who do it know and the consistency they are able to offer.

There is a guy on here that actually took a junk head to his shop class, and cut it apart with a band saw. It shows exactly where the water jackets are and all that good stuff you don't want to cut into. He even bench tested it and documented it really well. I did my own porting/polishing on my head. Here's a bit of what went into that, as well as some pro's, and con's from everyone. It has some information for turbo, and non-turbo as well.

Yep I already read that thread. Thats what made me want to practice on the spare head. I'm going to keep working on that head and take some more meat out of the exhaust ports.
