Did my air conditioning blow up?

I was cruising down the highway last night in my '91 240SX (KA24DE in it at the moment), and all of a sudden this weird smell entered the cabin. Then a whitish smoke started coming out the vents! I turned the A/C off to see if smoke was still going to come out and it stopped. I noticed an oily residue on the vents as well. I looked under the hood and everything looked kosher so I am assuming it's something strictly A/C related. Any ideas?

sounds like your evaporator core just let go. drop the glove box and have a look at the evap box. also, look in the evaporator drain tube under the car for a/c oil.

Yeah, that's what I thought it might be. I can get a used one from the junkyard relatively cheap. I don't know how susceptible they are to going bad so I am a little leary of that.

Secondly, my CA18 will be going in next month and I would really hate to redo the whole system twice when the new compressor goes in. I think I will just wait til I yank the motor and then do it all at once when the car is down for a couple days.

What happen to your car isnt that common. I cant say I ever remember hearing it happening. So your event is pretty isolated.
