I pulled the front cover off the engine from my 1991 Q45, and the guides look like the updated style with metal backs.

The sealant around the cover is light gray, so I figured it had never been opened up.

Attached are a couple of pics. Are these the new guides, or the old ones I need to replace?

They do appear to be the updated style! The OEM liquid gasket was usually a powder blue, so the light gray could be aftermarket. Engine looks nice and clean too!

Is that a Fram oil filter I see in the first pic? Most of us feel more comfortable with OEM or Mobil 1 filters. They have a check valve that holds oil in the filter when the engine is off - so the engine should get oil faster at start-up.

I will let someone else comment on your other post about the slop in the chain... It has been said in several posts that the chains will appear to be loose on one side or the other when the engine is off, so I suspect it's normal - but I don't have any actual DIY experience with the guides. I whimped out and took Q2 to T3...

Nice clean engine! It's good to see one that's been taken care of all of its life for a change.

Thanks for your help guys!

For those of your that remember Nick, this used to be his. The engine was replaced at almost 50K under dealer warranty when the chain guides broke and killed the original engine.

I bought the Q45 from Nick a couple years ago, but only drove it maybe six months before a guy yacking on his cell phone didn't even notice traffic had stopped for a red light. He rammed his pickup into me, never even touched his brakes. Totaled the the Q and messed up my back.

From the wreck I saved the engine becuase it only had 60k miles on it. A while back I found a 91 Q with the active suspension. I'm rebuilding the active suspension, and on Nick's old engine, replacing every maintenance item on the engine. It is really great to see find the metal backed guides!

As for the Fram oil filter, never again. I have a remote system ready to install once I figure out the best place to position the filter. I found an adapter for a giant filter that the Amsoil sells for the Cummins and Powerstroke diesel trucks. I figure it is over kill, but rather be too big than too small on the oil filter.b
