Bought my 240 a few months back, had "bent valves" when i bought it, a rust hole i did not see by the sun roof, minor ding by the trunk, dent by 1/4 panel wheel well. Electricals were't working(fixed it), paint seen better days but is alright for te year of car, minor cracks in dash, tear in driver seat, and there was a bunch of junk in the car when i got it (trash bags full of books in trunk and rear seats) oh and it's an automatic. Bought her for 600 bucks...

Here on down is the day i brought her to a good and loving home

looks decent but that rust is bad. Grind it down and weld some new metal in.

What are your plans for that engine?I don't want to say you got ripped off because its only 600 clams but there was a lot of stuff to fix and that motor doesn't seem like it'll run properly much longer with "bent valves." I like the EP6 in the back. Btw, the P stands for SR.

Dude, hate to be a killjoy here, so take what I'm saying as for your own good...

First off, if it's THAT rusted on the surface, I guarantee there's near-fatal rust in critical places (like the strut towers and frame).

Buying go-fast goodies for a car that needs a THOROUGH rehab seems silly to me.

Looks in OK shape otherwise, but it seems that replacing ALL the rubber parts (bushings, belts, hoses, lines) and ALL the wear items (pads, rotors) and getting it running aer far more important.

Return it to "as-new" condition and THEN mod the hell out of it.

But check out that rust - Seriously. If it's in the frame and unibody, it's not gonna be worth doing too much with it.

We'll be here for you regardless!

Yeah, I'm going to go with what AZ said... it'd be best to check EVERYWHERE for rust before getting knee deep in performance parts debt.

I almost bought an automatic S13 'vert for $500. I knew it wasn't running and was all in... until I found out it was a NY car that had been brought over a few year back. Took a close look at some pics and, sure enough, rust city.

Broke my heart, but not my wallet.

I would have thought the whole rust deal was common knowledge. I guess in cali and the south you really don't have to worry about that. i know in Japan they had a tendancy to rust from the inside out because of the salt from the sea, like in places in Okinawa.

Gypped: (V) past tense of gyp, to cheat. historical significance: Comes from the conception that all gypsies were thieves and swindelers, that when someone had been taken advantage of, they would have been 'gyped' by the gypsie

history of vocabulary lesson for the day.

tomorrow we find out the origin of 'the rule of thumb'

edit> also not *all* northeast cars are rusted to hell. i picked up my shell as a running car in jersey, it had been there at least 10 years by the same owner, and it only had a minor paint rust bubble (1/4 size of a dime) , a rust spot where the condenser drips on passenger side, besides that it was clean

while *most* of the cars are rustbuckets because they salt the snow in winter, not all endure that fate

for a running s13, thats a dealbuy a welder, a gasless flux/mig is under $150 shipped on ebay new learn, have fun

Hah! I know where the "Rule of Thumb" comes from!

Several hundred years ago an American landowner could beat his children, wife and servants with any object no greater in diameter than his thumb. Whether or not this tradition originated elsewhere, I'm not sure. I'm sure there's probably a biblical reference to it somewhere.. heh.

I checked the underbody of the car when i found out i had rust by the sunroof (paint bubble), and luckily i had no rust underneath. My brother is currently going to school for Collision Repair, and he said he'll do the bodywork and paintjob for me as long as I pay for the supplys. So hopefully that will save me a good bit of money.

Thanks, Mike
