This is for you Mark, I can't leave any racing stripes until I get my crap tires mounted on the steelies, this should do for now though:

I haven't talked to my friend Will in a REALLY long time and I ran across him while I was in town last night. He's got an 03' WRX with a fair list of mods; upgraded IHI turbo, full 3" exhaust, upgraded injectors, some short shifter, and UTEC. I'm on stock SOHC KA, 235,000 miles, belt driven fan delete, IAP stage 1 turbo kit at .5bar and 3" BRM exhaust w/ test pipe, EGR removed, and ebay short shifter.

We decided to do a couple of pulls from 30 mph. The first we were going up-hill slightly, he jumped about 2 cars ahead of me but I stayed within 3 cars of him (he was still pulling but slowly) until we shut down at around 105. second race we were going downhill, I jumped the gun and went a bit before his third honk, I started about 2 cars ahead and he reeled me in and my front bumper was at his rear door at around 105. Cheaters never win

Overall I'd say I'm VERY happy with my car and the minimal mods I've done. He's run 13's at the track in his WRX and I'm not sure exactly what he's boosting but for those of you not familiar with the UTEC, it's a complete replacement computer (read AEM EMS) and he's running a map set up for stage 3 mods (which is a very aggressive tune).

now to upgrade the injectors, maf, and pick some tuning hardware.

oh and this was all done in a safe, isolated, undisclosed location

not bad for my total budget (including car purchase and other suspension BS) just north of 5,000$

hey aaron i got a couple questions for ya.

are you using the stock radiator and the stock AC fan? because i am and i have no problems with overheating...i even took off the shroud when i removed the clutch fan. I was just wondering if your temp on the motor?

And what is the numbers on your turbo....48/.42 or is it bigger?

also what engine management are you using with the IAP kit?

lewis

thanks dude

running a 14" permacool fan with stock shroud and eletronic thermostat. my stock AC fan (different on the SOHC motors mine is in FRONT of the radiator) was siezed up I ordered another from E-bay and I'll put it in wired to come on with the ignition. I am running the stock radiator and am have no problems with overheating whatsoever.

.48 ar on the exhaust and .60 or 61 on intake.

no engine management whatsoever. just upgraded to walboro 255lph fuel pump which came with the kit. at half a bar the stock ECU is able to compensate even though I am running pig rich at idle. I'm in the process of figuring out how far I am going with the car and whether or not to get an SAFC II or just go balls out and get an AEM EMS w/ Map sensor.

thanks for the fast reply...you still at work or at home...i was gonna give you a call about that fuel rail....anywho...since your SOHC...I would buy an SAFC and get the DSM 450cc injectors....The SAFC can control UP to 540cc injectors...But with the 450's i would set them at -38% at idle and then work your way up thru the powerband. I bought my SAFC for 180 from a friend and i got the 450's for free thru a dsm guy wanting to get rid of them. My plans are for a top mount fuel rail so thats why i wanna see what i can do with the SOHC fuel rail...i need to see if the measurements are right...if they are then i wanna buy the fuel rail from you...but no bad feelings if i dont end up wanting it? the only way i would not buy it is if its not going to work...hope you understand but thanks in advance.

p.s. good work on the races.....and are you serious the stock ecu will compensate for 7 psi? thats crazy stuff....

still at work until 9pm

stock ECU is doing just fine on stock injectors. it runs a bit rich but I'd rather have it that way. I want to get an EGT gauge and wideband o2 (probably LM1) before I do any tuning. I'll probably just get an oil pressure gauge while I'm at it too but I'm really in the dark about my engine's stats and I dont like that.

no big deal on the fuel rail I have a spare motor I'm rebuilding and can stand to part w/ an extra fuel rail. if not idc either but i'd love to help another KAT owner out in their quest for more power.

he isnt' turbo'd yet, what I think he was trying to ask was if I had heat issues when I installed the turbo (to find out if he needed to upgrade his cooling system)

My friend has this simliar setup.I don't think Utech is a complete replacement computer, rather they are just a add-on top of the ECU ,but correct me if I'm wrong. Anyways,My friend tune his car at(stage 4 setup) 19psi and pushing about 289whp.

I probably won't. I am in the midst of rebuilding a Ka24E for boost and can use the 60$ it'll cost for a couple pulls to get my motor finished. I'll probably dyno it after I get the new motor put in but it'll be bored .20 over and may have some port work done on the head.

If I do I'll post it though.

are you going to turn your engine up some before you take it out? with some fuel management i am sure you could kill that wrx on 10 psi and you could run a lot more than that. i know i ran a lot of boost on my engine last week and it didnt blow up, check it out.

on my stock injectors I probably won't tempt fate (at least until I get the new motor completed) so I may turn the boost up a bit and do a couple of farewell burnouts (with pics of course) but until then I'm being very careful with the car since this is my daily driver.
