Hey there, got an issue that i need some help solving.

I recently finished rebuilding my rb20det and put it back in my s13. After some fiddling around and fixing minor issues, got it started up, it idled for 20 minutes or so just fine, so i drove it over to a friends house; no problems at all whatsoever on the way there, except it felt like the timing was a bit off. So, got to my friends house, turned it off, and turned the CAS a little bit. Sat there and talked for a while, started her back up, and drove off.

Now, the issue. About half a mile down the road from his house, it died. No warning, no odd noises, nothing; just sudden complete loss of life. While it was still rolling, i spun the starter; it wouldn't start, but sounds 100% normal while spinning. Since that didnt work, and it was still doing 20 or so, i put it in 2nd and let out the clutch to try to get it to start. All i got was a backfire about the same volume as a gunshot.

If you spin the engine for 5-10 seconds, it backfires loud as hell. But again, while spinning, it sounds completely normal, no effed up bearings or anything audible. I'm 98% sure its the CAS; pulled the CAS off and the shaft was pulled partway out of the housing, smelled burnt-ish, etc. Pushed the shaft back in, turned the ignition on so i could test it by spinning it by hand; as long as i kept pressure on the shaft (pushing towards the sensor housing), i could hear the injectors clicking. Without holding pressure however, just spinning it, theres nothing.

So, What does everyone think? Obviously, if the CAS isn't THE problem, then it's still A problem haha, but what other possibilites are there?

Is your upper timing cover installed? If it isn't odds are you ruined the cas. Your ignitor could be shot too.

No it's not, and yeah, i found out real quick why that was a mistake haha. Not a mistake I plan on repeating.
Are you saying that the CAS failure could have killed the ignitor, or that the ignitor is just another possible cause? Either way, i was already about to do the LS2 truck coil swap, so if the ignitor fried, it's no biggie.

I'm just really concerned with other possible problems.
E.G.: Yes, the CAS is toast.
But, A: What else could have caused those symptoms?
B: What other problems could have been caused by the CAS failure, if any?

Replace the CAS and move on with life. I was suggesting the ignitor as a possible suspect, but if your cas is junk get a new one. It's very unlikely you damaged anything.

Yeah, i'm 100% sure it's toast, pulled the CAS apart earlier, and the shaft had sheared itself in half right above the optical disk.

If i have a chance, I'll try rebuilding it, and do a DIY write-up for everyone else. But i might just buy one if i'm feeling lazy/spendthrift-y.

I really appreciate the input though!

The timing cover acts like a spacer of sorts for the CAS. without it it's too far in and get damaged from what I remember. Not the 1st time this has happened. Z32 CAS can be used but you need to repin the cas plug on the RB.
