detonation?

Hello,
I was wondering,. how to detect the detonation?
I know i need to listen to the engine, but with my exhaust on the loud side, i cant here s***.
is there any other way to diagnose it?
Would it help to bring it to the dyno, to run some air to fuel test , things like that nature?

Why not re-install the catalytic converters so your exhaust is quieter so you can hear the detonation??????

The best way to settle it is to connect [bridge the 550,000 ohm knock sensor] via a 2-5 Meg impedance
amplifier and listen to the knock with a speaker [a cheap Fm modulator thru the car stereo or just an old
battery cassette player might be rigged to listen under different driving conditions.
