I love descent I used to get seriously creeped out by the green robots with the 4 claws in front. Good old Games has a deal with descent 1 and 2 for $5.99 and no stupid DRM http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/descent_1_descent_2

Freespace was great. The story and missions were an improvement over the originals. I still kind of felt that the novelty of the 6DOF in those claustrophobic multi-dimensional tunnels was more memorable than the open-space battles of Freespace. But maybe that's just sort of "Ocarina of Time" syndrome (you know...the memories are better than the actual experience).

Another fantastic flight shooter in the vein of Descent was Terminal Velocity. It still had its share of claustrophobic tunnels (one boss is very Descent-like in a large circular room reached through narrow tunnels) but the majority of gameplay took place over massive, spectacularly beautiful planetary landscapes. Easily one of the best looking games of its time. It controlled well, too and, as you might guess from the name, high speed was a big part of gameplay (since the levels were so vast).

Descent has aged very well in part because nobody else was able to copy Parallax's forumala and make it work as well as they did, I'm actually glad for that because if it was ever remade thse days it would sell like 10 copies unless it somehow become an openworld sandbox with 3rd person cover and regerating health

Yeah...I never really thought about that, but I'm glad that Descent is one classic that hasn't been remade or "brought up to date" or any of that unnecessary garbage.

Anyone that's going to play this on a new computer might want to check out this source port

http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/?Welcome

It add a few new graphic effects like mip mapped textures blah blah blah but the big thing is it supports modern widescreen resoulutions so you aren't stuck at 320x240.

Freespace was an amazing game...I can remember myself sitting there and just playing for hours - it was so well done...

In fact I still have a ZIP file of Freespace 2 if anyone wants it lol.
