Dell is usually a hit or miss for quality, but the Optiplex, used frequently in offices, has a solid reputation. Ours are trouble-free.

Widely used in government systems. I work computer support at an army base and they've been excellent.

Good business/eductational systems (my school has classrooms full of them)

They get the job done, but don't expect to do much gaming.

If you intend to game on it at all, forget it. Dell's can only have their proprietary sound cards and they cause all sorts of compatibility issues in games. The turtle beach is EVIL!! Dell does things to windows, so its not the same as the windows you'd buy off the shelf. Windows sucks enough as it is, but Dell makes it worse. Even more compatibility problems.

If its for school or email or that crap, yeah, go for it. The may not be the most reliable but they're close, and their customer support is excellent (they have taught my 70-something grandmother who's German accent is so strong I can barely understand her how to use the internet and email). Plus, the things are undeniably cheap.

My recomentation:go to pricewatch.com. You can buy pre-built or design every component. They have incredible deals. It's an advertising central, so you get links to different manufacturer's deals. That's how I'm getting my next laptop.

Or you could just buy all the parts, send them to me, and I'll assemble it for cheap as hell. Or give me a list and some money and I'll buy it and build it, equally cheap.

Work with Optiplex at work and no probs as of yet , I own 3 Dimensions (2 : 4600 and 1 4600c) And never a problem from them either. I did have small prob with my modem when I went to Suse 9.1 Pro on one (STINKY WINMODEMS) .

Tigerdirect.com < 1000

Hell give me a few minutes and I'll put a list together with prices.

Edit:

List!

Processor and motherboard (AMD64 3400+, Asus board) - 349.99http://www.tigerdirect.com/app...=1181

Case - Meh, just get a case. One that suits your tastes

Memory (I gig of pwnination - Dual Channel DDR 500) - 249.99http://www.tigerdirect.com/app...30255

Video - ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128M (Awesome card, own one myself) - 239.99http://www.tigerdirect.com/app...d=880

Sound Card - Really can't give you anything here as I haven't been keeping up with it. I do know the Audigy series is awesome. Umm... You can just use the onboard sound if you want to cut costs (like I am...but then again I have an nforce based board )

Windows 2000 Pro - Free

I assume you have speakers and stuff

ha computer manufactors are more mix and matchable now than ever! they got 2 choices here um...Intel or Amd. freaking TI, samsung, and toshiba make most all the optical drives and HD;s on the planet. The only thing dell has sole rights to is Lexmark ink carts for thir Dell/lexmark printers and even that can be shaved with a file to fit all Lexmarks. My point is build it yourself spend half the money and get 10x the PC. <REST>

Well, I just bought a Dell laptop like three months ago, and it kicks butt. I love it.

But if I was doing a desk top, I do built computers only. You get exactly what you want and at a price better than what you can buy it from a manufacturer like Dell. I am getting ready in about two months to start my new build.

your right. see our hands are tied on laptops or anything with an liquid crystal screen b/c of supply and demand of them number 1 but another issue is its not quit there yet in cost effectiveness. i have built them custom for clients but they really do got the market beat on anything with an LCD

god this thread went to hell. Dell= teh crap

why do you ask is it crap? TECH SUPPORT FROM INDIA. My friend in sac bought a new dell a year ago and right out of the box he had to call them about his cd-rw not working.........................................

Really gay if you ask me.

NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM TIGER DIRECT. That company can go nuke themselves off this planet. Like dell, wait till you have a problem with a part or computer and good luck with supoort.

What else..... I like alienware the best, honestly.

nope, has nothing to do with one item. When i worked in sacramento for a school district that had the opti. specials. I would have to deal with the POS computers breaking down all the time.

One of the computers motherboard desided to die. So, then on hold for 30min then talking to some indian bastard for 1hr. He finally desides ok i think it's the motherboard.............................................................................................

Then i waited 1.5 weeks for the motherboard. Do you think he really wants to go through that?

Would you like more examples?

I've never had a dell. I think building your own comp is the way to go.

cnickk - Wish I could've gone through you instead of newegg when I bought my mobo/cpu/memory 2 weeks ago. :[

lol why? thats probobly where he buys his parts. lmao.

If you ever want to build a machine just post it on NICO there are a few of us computer literate people that can help you choose the right parts

Tsujau240: what kind of prices are you looking for? If your looking to play games 512mb of memory isn't going to cut it anymore. You need a min. of 1gb now.

Ewww a 9200 SE..... wow how old. lol

THe computer looks great but please don't go through tiger direct... OH GOD IT COMES WITH XP HOME EDITION TOO X/

well i posted my parameters erlier so i do want 1000mb of mem. i'll just slap another 512 when i need it. as far as windows XP, i'll get rid of it when i'm ready. i realy like windows 98-ME. remember i just want to start small and go from there, upgrading and modding when i can. one step at a time.

ok now whats wrong with tigerdirect?
