I bought a 1989 240sx coupe about 5 months ago that was in rough shape, i have managed to get it into good condition mechanicly and physically all i need now is a new windshield and its more than just driveable.

i did some research on insurence and found a really good quote $2600 CAD. heres the delimma, i am 17 years old and my father wants me to sell it and not get insured because he sees it as a higher chance of me "pushing the limits and dying" because it is a 'sports' car. i paid for everythign myself slaving away at sobeys and dont see why he should make that call.. he seems very afraid to give me any freedom/responsibulities/respect.

what could/should/can i do etc... to some how bring him around to the idea.

looking for a good discussion here please limit the wise cracks and such...

TIA,Kyle

Damn that sucks. Has your father driven it yet? He may be surprised by how slow this "sports car" really is.

Where in Canada do you live?!

I live in Toronto, and insurance for a 2 door "sports car" at 17 was like $4500.

Anyways, my dad did the exact same thing to me. What you want to do, before you start arguing with him, is build up some sort of trust. Take him for spins in the 240, and dont go fast at all. Make him feel like the car is a piece of ****, and cant go more than 60km/k without having the front bumper fly off. Drive safe, and be aware. If he sees that you are aware of your surroundings, and that you know how to drive carefully, he might probably think twice about not letting you keep the car.

I took my dad in a couple spins, and I never used WOT. Haha, sounds lame..but it worked. Then once he's out of sight...vroooooooom. ;)

Good luck.

just try to somehow earn his trust. weather you take him for a ride in the car or come home 1/2 early on weekends for a few weeks, you have to show him that you really want to accept the responsibility. maybe try to somehow do something nice for him and have him realize that you really want the car. just try to suck up.

Well, as flashy as it looks, you can truthfully tell him it's not a sports car. It's a "sporty coupe." Big difference to an insurance company. If he has his doubts, suggest he check with his insurance agent. You can also tell him, it has a good reliability record, gets good gas mileage, it fared well in government crash tests, has a low hp 4 cyl pickup truck motor (so it ain't gonna win any drag races), and has very good emergency handling.

The only downsides I think your dad might have with it is that it's flashy looking, and sucks in snow, which you I'm sure you could discuss with him.

first of all...don't let him read this thread. then tell him that you'll sell the car if he buys you a new SUV.seriously though...take him for a ride..or let him drive it. he'll figure out real quick how much of a "sports car" it is.

The 240 is not a sports car, and tell him thats it possible to push the limits in any car. Its not fair to single out a certain car....

What you should do is "push the limit" in his car, and crash it. Then slap him, and say "I'm rick James, *****!"

(That was a joke, DON'T do it)

hes never wanted me to get a car and its been my dream since i was 10 years old, so one night i kinda showed up with one... not really a trust building move but i follow my dreams. he freaked but i did some quick talking and warmed him up to the idea of me working on it. now that all i need is a windshield and its more than good to go hes getting tense about the idea of me keeping it. i dont want to sell it.

the take him for a drive idea doesnt work becuse hes a 'what if' freak and wont risk talking it out on the suburb's streets with me.

today i asked him what if i sell it and buy another and fix that up, he refused... wants me to pay $1100 to drive his crappy cars unfortunately

OT: that dave chapel show was hilarous

in a sense i can see where your dad is coming from, considering me and my freinds crashed a car very bad due to driving fast. i really dont know what else to tell you, besides the fact that you should really start kissing up to him. literally. and then make him some pancakes and grapes. If you paid for it with your own money, and you're going to insure it, I don't see why he has such a problem with it. Granted, it's far sportier than the Echo, but it's not that sporty. It's just a great car for people our age. I think if you do let him see that, he'll agree to it. I'm suprised he isn't letting you get your own car, as it's way easier for you to drive yourself places than either take one of the family cars or get dropped off. If I were you, I'd try to no end to convince him of letting you keep it. I also kind of did the "randomly bought a car and showed up with it at the house" thing too.. Yeah.. doesn't usually go over well. At least he didn't run right out and stick a new "For Sale" sign in it.

Kill your psycho father...end of story. You're an adult, not some 5 year-old. I'm sure you know the risks of driving just like everyone else (including your father to some degree). I just can't understand why he'd be so paranoid about it.

That's being pretty harsh considering you are paying for everything. You might be able to talk him into letting you keep it if you don't drive it until you are older. You also could "hide" it for a while, at least until you are 18 or out of the house. Out of sight, out of mind, hopefully. My 240 has actually prevented me from having a few accidents I would have probably had with less responsive cars. It was already mentioned, but the KA will nearly last forever, "so you won't be hitting him up for money in a few years for a new car". If he doesn't know too much about cars/engines, you could try to explain to him that a venture has a much larger engine than the 240 *wink*. You might have to compromise, but it is worth it to keep the 240! Good luckbtw, I absolutly hate automatics too. I can barely stand driving them, unless it is to pick up my 240.

My dad will let me get a 240 ;) but he was hesitant also, so i just drive his 2001 F-350 like an old man to show him I can drive a tank, so a hatchback wont be a big problem ;)

Yes, the 240SX is considered a sports car by enough institutions to catagorize it as one in a statistic.

Your dad is just watchin out for you, because legitimate statistics from highway safety organizations and insurance companies show that sports cars tend to have a higher rate of accidents. Piss and moan about how its not fair, but these are facts.

Sucks for you that he is giving you heat, but it also sucks for him, as he is worried for your safety. After all, the 240SX isnt exactly your safest car (RWD, no traction control, lightweight, no airbags) relative to whats out there on the road.

And he does have a point about the "pushing the limits" mentality, especially since you are an enthusiast. The most dangerous thing about a sports car is the driver's mentality behind the wheel, and most enthusiasts enjoy the escalated driving experience, but many cannot handle it.

My advice to you: Dont let the sports car thing get to your head, even if it hasnt yet. When a modified civic revs on you at a light, ignore him. Do not take 90degree turns at 50mph, in wet or dry pavement. Have pride in your car, but refrain from physically demonstrating its potential on public roads. Avoid tickets and accidents, and the longer you keep that up, the more trust you earn from your father, and the more he will see you as a responsible driver, regardless of the car you drive.

If he wants to see pushing the limits, tell him to spend a day with me in the 3k when I'm pissed. The tank will fly, trust me.

Oh and cocaine is one hell of a drug.
