Delayed/intermittant turn on

When I turn on the audio system in my '93 J30, I get no audio output for a while, then after a few moments, it "wakes up" and behaves normally. When the system is turned on, the display turns on, the antenna goes, the CD loads and plays, but no audio output initially. Sometimes the delay is just a few seconds, sometimes its a few minutes or more. No jiggling of the controls has any effect.

This will happen whether the system is turned on from the radio power switch, or from the ignition (such as when the ignition was last turn off while the radio was on).

Once the sound comes on, it stays on and the system is fine. Until its turned off.

Its not a warm-up issue. Acts like there's a stuck relay or something. Anyone experience this? I'm an EE and don't mind tearing into the head unit.
