94 Q... Just started taking 5-10 seconds in the a.m. to engage into drive after I have already shifted into drive??? Does this sound like my transmission might be on its way out? Any info appreciated.

P.S. The fluids not brown, & doesn't smell burnt??? BUT 145,000 miles

Do the white paper towel test.

Any degradation from new M1 ATF is indicative of how bad it is.

I assume it is warmed to operating temperature before being driven, regardless.

Do you have a transmission cooler??

I would consider changing the fluid, personally. On the way home my transmission was slipping hardcore in 4th gear, and now its like new since i changed the fluid.

One thing about hydraulically driven machinery is that they must have the correct NEW fluid to operate as they shoud.

Layla has been doing this every morning, for the past 35,000 miles. I have had the transmission flushed with no change in performance. Try putting it in 3rd, right out of reverse. Layla drops right into third, and I shift into Drive when I get out on the local highway.

I think it is a line pressure or leaking valve issue.

There is a transmission guy that was on here a while back and had a lot of great information.

Do a search for transmission related threads and send him an email.

Layla is on her 2nd transmission. The first one died a violent death at 105K by an 80 MPH impace with a trucks brake drum. I don't have a transmission cooler, and I have done power flushes and filter changes every 60,000 miles. (I am sure someone will say I need a cooler and should do the flushes every 30K - that is what I am doing with Lola - in addition to Amsoil full synthetic fluid.) Layla will get a new transmission and all the good stuff when she quits shifiting all together. As long as she still kicks it to 120 for my high-speed blasts o nthe way home, and shifts relatively smoothly, I won't make a change.

Thanks all.... Same scenario as you described. She will drop into 3rd directly in the a.m. but not into drive without the delay. Will have a flush done just in case.

Also... No transmission cooler, but a replaced radiator 3 months ago. Wonder if the cooler in my replacement radiator may not be as efficient as the original. I bought it from radiators.com

With a little reading of the previous posts, you will discover that the in radiator ATF device is more of a heat exchanger for bringing the ATF up to operating temperature so impatient drivers who do not warm their cars to operating temperatures prior to driving can shift into overdrive.

While the late models (1994-1996) G50 seem to have the best of the OEM configurations, an external ATF cooler is still preferred. See pictures under my name in Member's Rides.

Does your replacement radiator have plastic of aluminum end caps?
