Hi there,

I mentioned a few months ago about my air conditioning having a moldy/stale smell to it until it ran for a few minutes. Now the same thing is happening with my defrost. It does go away after a few minutes but is this normal? Should there be no smell when running the defrost? I remember someone saying that it's usually caused by someone running the AC and then parking their car and that it's a good idea to run the outside air vent to get rid of excess moisture. I have done that to no avail. I'm thinking of bringing it to the dealer when I can get some time off of work to do so because someone else mentioned a clog in the drain for the moisture that accumulates.

So, does everyone agree I should bring the vehicle in?

Couldn't hurt to bring it in and have it checked out. When I complained of the occasional smell in my car my dealer suggested I change my diet. That seemed to work.

Bring it in. Changing your diet will requires too much effort. When I used to have a car, the A/C drain tube got clogged with a leaf or 2. I thought it was just stinky carpet but I discovered the real problem when running the A/C on a hot summer day. I turn a corner and all this water spilled onto the floor from the dash. The water would drain slowly and cause a funky mold smell. That day, there was so much moisture that the water had no else where to go. You can check your carpet for wet spots also. There was another user who had a problem with the A/C draining under the carpet. He had to have all the carpet replaced. It could be the in cabin filter, if there's one and it's located before the defrost tubes.
