Defective Dotmatrix LCD

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Just bought 2011 EX35. Black background of information center has snowflake like pixelations. The white foreground works fine.

My google searches tell me i can replace wgole panel ($1080) 6 yr old car-not happening. Or try to find one in bone yard or Ebay. If I try that, can anyone tell me which models and years are compatible with my 2011 EX35??

Does anyone have any other solutions? If I manage to find an electronics guy that claims to be able to repair lcd displays, will the car be operable if i run it witj=hout that panel?

Any help appreciated

There are quite a few of these (used) on eBay, prices range from around $100-$250.

Just do an Ebay search using the part numbers listed by "Rogue One", find out the build date of your vehicle and make sure you get the part # correct.

Thx. Except that is for Navigation.

My problem is the 'Dot Matrix Liquid Crystal Display' that provides info such as odometer , mpg, mph, warnings etc. located in the middle of instrument cluster

It's going to be work similar to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIbIwRxcD1I

You might try working on the ribbon cable connectors or reseating them. Consider ESD protection for this kind of work. I have fixed LCD ribbon cables on occasion, but just as often I've broken them entirely. I think G37 or G35 screens should work in our car too. In the video he shows exactly how to fix the ribbon cable. There are some other techniques.

Thx. I can try playing with the ribbon cable, but I really don't think that is it. The information display is perfect. It is the black background where the problem is.

I kind of thought this was more common than it actually is

If that's the case then it's either the adhesion of the backing or polorizing layer. You're not wearing polarizing glasses by chance are you? It would really help if you could include a photo.

That is really bizarre. It almost looks like a worm has gotten into it and eaten the LC layer, but that doesn't seem possible. I'll do some research, but I think that whole screen needs to be replaced.

Update: the screen is cracked and leaking LC. It may get worse in high temps.

I have a spare instrument cluser for a ex35. I bought it to transplant some dead LEDs.

I have the middle LCD panel, but it is red and from a 2009 or 2010. (cant remember)

Thanks guys.

I feel somewhat good that it's not a common prob.

Sev, if you've still got that and it'll fit, I'd like to try to get it. In fact, if I'll be pulling instrument cluster, I think I'll probably be able to change out some bulbs to red. I'd like to try to get in touch w/ you....I'll send you a private msg

Sev, it appears as a new user I do not yet have private message sending privileges. Though I haven't seen a rule as such, I would imagine i shouldn't be posting an email of phone #. If you could PM to me, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to see if i can get that panel. Thanks

If you don't hear back from that user, and to eliminate the risk of soldering problems when you transplant that part, you could just get a new cluster from here: http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odkw=&_ ... r&_sacat=0 ebay user lkqonline has lots of parts and I've bought from them before with excellent results.

Thanks Teknical Sev got back to me....he was great, but in the end I won't be using his panel (because I need to stick with a white LCD). I'll be checking out lgqoonline, but I have some questions, just so I only have to do this once. I am on the hunt for a compatible part. I can do a little soldering but i was under the belief that the LCD was connected by a ribbon cable. If I change out entire instrument cluster, i believe I have to get it programmed at dealer? Am i correct on one or both points?

Can Also, not a major objective to change bulbs, but i am uncertain about the leds on a 2011....are they soldered on to circuitboard or are they t5 bulbs?

I am seeing a bunch more instrument clusters for G25 and G37. I know the whole cluster won't just pop in, but I'd be guessing I can take the Liquid Crystal Display out and it would be the same LCD. Am i correct?

I see some clusters for sale stating they are out of car w/ nav. I don't have NAV; does it matter?

Any input greatly appreciated.

Mgreen,

The clusters definitely do not use bulbs. They use SMT LED's. The reason I have my spare cluster is a bunch of LEDs died on my cluster and it annoyed me, so I went out bought a donor cluster and did some soldering work to transplant.

I am about 99% sure the LCD is attached by ribbon cable, I dont remember having to do soldering to remove it. As far as replacing the entire cluster, I'm sure it's possible, but would require programming to get the mileage correct. My experience with getting infiniti dealers to program anything is not very good. I tried to get them to update my bluetooth module, and it took a few trips to get them to understand what I was looking for.

I dont have direct experience with Nissan/Infiniti, but on BMW's, if you plug in a new cluster in the car, the mileage is stored on both the cluster and another module in the car. The car compares the two stored mileages (cluster and module) and goes with whichever is higher. So say your car has 50k mi, and your donor cluster shows 70k mi, the car will display 70k miles. I'm sure infiniti has a similar system in place.

I would think it would be easier to buy a donor cluster and transplant the LCD. While the G25/G37 clusters look the same, if I were you, to be on the safe side. I'd get an actual ex35 cluster to be sure the LCD is compatible.

Here's a cluster that should work for you.

AARGH Haven't caught a break yet. I was advised that this listing is for a car w/ Nav and my car is without Nav and it matters. I don't see why it would matter but that is what i was told. Does anyone know if or why it would matter?

No, I don't think nav would matter.

I want to hear the Bluetooth module upgrade story please!
