Default compass and auto-dim to OFF?

Does anyone know of a way to have the compass and auto-dim set to OFF as the default?

I held down the compass button on the RVM for several seconds and it turned from an "8" to a "C" and got stuck there. This kind of freaked me out because I thought I messed it up, so I did it again and left it on the "8" and eventually the compass got to normal. I just haven't found out how to turn it off by default.
