Jon and I were messing with the timing to try and get it to 15 degrees today. We had it turned full clockwise and it would time out at 15 degrees on the crank but ran like total crap. Then we eyeballed it and set it where Jon has it and it ran better, but according to the timing marks on the crank it is running about 50 degrees btdc.

The only thing that we can conclude is that the timing belt was not reinstalled correctly and it is off a tooth on either of the cams, most likely on the exhaust cam since that is where it is timed from. It can't be off more than that, because if it was, I would have problems with the valves slamming into the piston's. IF it was a tooth off, would that explain our timing problem and also a lack of a top end? It really doesn't want to go over 4500 rpms, I hit boost cut that high up.

I mean, I can drive the car if I keep it at about 5 psi, but if it spikes (which it does all the time, possibly an upgraded actuator) it hits boost cut.

Any ideas since you are our resident CA18DET guru?

Joe

BTW.... I love this motor, just can't wait until it is running at 100 percent, right now it is at about 80 percent. Slowly but surely I am getting there!

These engines are not forgiving if you are off some teeth because it will give you major drama just trying to start it. Did you change the timing belt already? I would suspect a faulty CAS or bad ground from the engine to chasis (I doubt this one). I wish I could round all of you guys' cars up and make them run the way there supposed to. The simple problems you're having is a simple fix, but would need to be in my posession.

I guess I could con Jon into swapping CAS's me and checking that way. Also I could check the resistance from the block to the chassis and double check the ground on it. I did have to reroute the negative battery cable to make it fit from the battery to the block.

But.... like I said, even at 80% of its full stock potential, I love the motor! Even at 5 pounds it feels WAY more powerful than the KA. I have to let off of it before the turbo starts to spool too hard since I am running sans intercooler and "eyeballed" timing. Man.... can't WAIT to get all my goodies on it and be able to drive it somewhat harder than I am driving it now. Right now I am babying it, no revs over 4k and short shifting ALL the time. Haven't had it on the highway yet either.

Yeah... off at 6, home by 6:30. Come on over before you go to Motions if you go, or you can just come down and we can put the car in the garage and work there. Also, bring that hoist if you can. If not, you, me, and Robin are going to have to heft that KA into the back of your car :) Just gimme a call, or I can call you when I get in.

PS.... don't forget the wastegate actuator too!!
