decodeing the engine/block numbers

i have a couple of SOHC engine sitting in my garage but im not sure from what year cars they can out of? so basically what i would like to know is how to decode the numbering on the block to know what year the engine was produced. any help would be greatly appreciated because im completely clueless at the moment.

i have the blocks only..not the cars..and supposedly one of the cars i got one of the single cams from had a different single cam in it.. soooo back to my question.. how can i decode the numbering on the side of the block.any help?

number on the side of the block read 88238

well how can i tell what year the engines are from.. where can i get a copy of this boook
