Hey Guys,

Trying to decide on a direction with my 97 J30T. Its black on black leather, it just turned 100,000 miles recently. The CHECK ENGINE light has been on as well as the ABS light. Any ideas/advice?

I understand it needs a new Idle Air Control for the car which is like $700 from what I have looked up....

Its an awesome car. So , I am trying to weigh out the options of how to go about fixing it as well as trying not spend a fortune on it. I of course have the luxury of my drivers side door locking itself shut every other 2 days. Can anyone explain what the best thing to do is? Do you guys have these problems with your J30s too..?

Anywhere where I can get quality j30 parts relatively inexpensive?

Thank so much for any suggestions

The driver's door lock, locking or unlocking itself is caused by the actuator starting to fail. Its very common on J's.

The best place to get parts is one of our sponsors:

OEM parts prices cheaper then your local dealer. I would call them.

As for the ABS light, its likely the ABS module has failed, which is a common age related problem. When you have your hood open(and the engine off), look along the passenger side, you will see a black box, The box lid is is held by clips, gently take it off. In it you will see a black module. pull straight up on it. it will come out. take that module to your local Nissan/Infiniti dealer and purchase a new one and plug it in.

If that doesn't fix your problem, its likely you waited to long between the ABS light coming on and getting it fixed and you've likely burned out your ABS pump.

If you have room to store the best thing you could probably do is buy a parts car if you have multiple expensive parts that need replacing, preferably one that was running fine and everything worked until a sudden minor accident or catastrophic failure of one thing like the engine or transmission. If you get it cheap enough you can fix your own car with the parts and sell the rest, possibly even making a profit along the way. I bought a parts car to fix up the G20 I used to have for $125 plus $100 to get it towed about 30 miles. I got all the parts I needed and sold the rest for about what I had invested in it, plus I have a bunch of relays and fuses I kept. I could have made even more if I had the pink slip, which I didn't, so I gave the remains to some guy who rented a flatbed trailer and hauled it out into the desert and stripped the rest of it there.

Pull engine codes. I could use a new rear seat top and auto-dimming rear view mirror for my pearl white with black interior '93.

There's not too much about the IAC valve that can't be fixed by cleaning it and electrical components are easy to check, using a multimeter. If any components need replacing, try a wrecking yard.

Wrecking yards, Craigslist, Ebay. Recently picked-up a fairly complete engine for $180.

Door lock timer. Very common problem and easy to replace.

You'll probably want/need to disconnect and move assorted hoses, and electrical connectors out of the way to make it more accessible, and it can come out as two separate parts (the IAA and the Air Reg).

Part 2 of the write-up is pretty thorough too.

And then there's this segment too on connector cleaning!
