I'm shopping for a 350Z, and, with the help of my local Connecticut Z-Car Club, I've enlisted the shopping aid of three CT dealers. After giving them parameters of what I wanted (any year, any trim, minimal mods allowed, under $14,000, and under 65,000 miles), one of them contacted me last week, telling me he just took in a beauty.

I went and saw it, and he wasn't lying. The Le Mans sunset orange with the burnt leather interior on the 2006 350Z Performance he showed me was gorgeous. The 14,000 miles on the odometer was great! The aftermarket navigation (the only noticable mod) was tasteful, but the $23,998 price tag was a little bit ugly for my tastes.

I realize I probably should have asked for the price before I headed over there (luckily it was on my way; otherwise I'd have driven 70 miles each way for nothing) but was I wrong to assume that he wouldn't show me a car that was nearly twice as much as what I'd asked for?

Any similar dealer-goof stories out there in NICOland?

That's how all dealers seem to be. When I was looking for my car, I told them very explicitly that I didn't NOT want navigation in the car. I fully planned on gutting the stereo and going aftermarket. I don't know how many cars they tried to sell me with nav. The even offered to drop it from a $2000 option to a $1000 option. Like I wanted to spend $1k for something to sit in a closet. Or trying to sell me a CVT because it was optioned exactly as I wanted. Honestly, I came in with a very specific set of requirements. Fill them and I buy, no questions. It can't be any easier of a sale than I offered them yet they still couldn't handle it.

You're absolutely right about it being an easy sale for them - there's no selling involved! Just find the car!

Dealers always do that. I remember back in 98 I was looking for a Eclipse (don't laugh lol) I wanted GST or GSX, 5 speed, leather, white. Not too difficult. But dealers kept trying to show me Proteges, civics etc. I ended up getting pretty rude with some of them. Lol. I finally just found one by not talking to any salesmen. I just wondered around on the lots. Saved lots of time that way.

If you want something done right, do it yourself.

they will tell you anything to get you in the door, never trust them, always confirm details, insist on getting what you want.

I agree 100%. I think the reason they do that is because too many people fall for the salesmans tricks and end up getting something other what they originally wanted. I like the way Jesda does things. If they are rude or don't listen to me I can easily take my business and my money down the road.

One time I asked for a car fax during the closing and they gave me this:

What a waste of my time...

I'm surprised that Jesda isn't in here yet.
