Took my 07 G35 MT to dealership the other day asked for an oil consumption test, since it's been burning 1/2 qt oil every 500 highway miles. They did an oil change to start the OC test from fresh, that's fine with me even though it's not necessary according to Infiniti OC TSB. When I got home to my surprise I noticed that the oil change sticker on the windshield indicates that they changed what was in engine, 5W-30, the grade which Infiniti calls for, to 10W-30. I don't know if it's a mistake or for the purpose of minimizing oil consumption. 10w -30 is thicker than 5W-30 I believe. If excessive oil consumption is caused by valve stem seals, then thicker oil will burn less.

Possible they did put it in.

I've been using 10w30 during the spring/summer (but haven't ever had oil consumption issue).

It is the weight of the oil, but it has to with vicosity. Don't drive the car cold. If you're losing that much oil, you are having oil consumption problems. At this point, I would beat on the car to ensure some type of oil consumption problem, but not to hard. My g37 loses oil if I bash it a few times on the highway, over a 35-40 mile distance. Get a new motor!

That's what I am going to do. I suspect that there will be a fight for a new engine but I am determined.

Mine has used oil since day 1
I failed to qualify for a new engine a few years ago when I did the consumption test
Mine used 2 qts over 4k miles and I gave it its 40th oil change a week ago.
I use 5w-30
Some engines use oil and some do not
Nothing to get too excited over
Oil is cheap
I buy it by the case at Pep Boys on sale and add oil when needed
Check it weekly

^ I wish your approach was a little more common.

Using 5/30 instead of 10/30 or vice versa is not really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, using a Nissan filter makes more of a difference, checking your tires regularly makes more of a difference. If you continue to drive the same way (common downshifts) you will still end up with a new short block.

Infiniti does not replace entire engine assemblies anymore for oil consumption the problem (in this run of engines) originates in the crankcase and even when run low on oil there was no measurable trace found on the rest of the engine components. According to Nissan engineers I have spoken with in the last week.

Oil consumption is not something you will ever quiet live without but you really need to put it into context a little. There are several reasons manual transmission equipped vehicles tend to consume a little more oil is varying crankcase pressures can have unintended consequences over time. Infiniti is pretty good about covering this, from my experience.

Again every dealer is independently owned and operated so every service experience will be different.
