If you have a dealer plate then technically you don't have to smog, insure, or register the vehicle with the plate affixed to the car... however... if you are caught street racing or even speeding with a gray market vehicle then depending on the cop you may have your car impounded and even crushed along with the ticket and fines that go along with them. Feel free to test the theory. I know that alot of "dealers" have driven RHDs with the plates, including myself, but I tell you first hand that it is not a magic bullet. I was minding my own business driving my S14 rhd in Cali on the 405 and was in dead stop traffic. Next thing I know I get smoked into by a catering truck going 40mph. Not only was I almost passing out from shock but when the CHP showed up to take the report they told me to follow them back to the CHP facility where they held me for 4 hours, barely able to stay awake sitting on a wooden bench getting interrogated by a sergant. After all that, with no medical assistance btw, they impounded my car and told me to call for a ride and not to leave the area while they investigated the "legality of the car." I was driving on my friends dealer plate "transporting" the vehicle for him when the accident happened. I get a call about a month into them "investigating the legality of the car" saying that they believe the car is stolen and it is to be crushed and blah blah blah... I personally bought the car from a junk yard in Japan and had it shipped so i knew this to be untrue and had my lawyer contact the CHP office via letter. Three days later I got a call saying my car was released and I could pick it up however I was to dismantle the car immediately. When I got the car back the CHP had grinded off my serial numbers saying that the car was on the black list and not to try and register it or I could face jail time and massive fines. No Problem. So as you can see, you can take a chance but don't get in an accident or even lok at a cop the wrong way or you too can get a major *** raping. The End...
