alright, so i went to miller infiniti and got my record from day one on my newly bought 92 q45.

new trans, at 85k and new drive shaft around same time.

when i asked the service guy there about guides and chain on 92, he insisted that they are fine. although he admitted that 90-91 had major problems.

i called the infiniti directly and complained about the chain and guides and told them that im considering to buy a new q45, but they have to tell me what's up with my old Q or fix them.

i might just pull a mission impossible convincing the infiniti to recall the guide problems, or at least tried.

stay tuned.

Drinks are on me if you get them on a recall. My understanding is that you have to convince the NTSA or something like that. If there was a recall issued, you think those of us with new guides would at least get re-imbursed for the parts we bought? Or maybe Fred could get reimbursed for 2 engines?

Fredwhy dont we start a campaign on this guide issue and let infiniti know that we want to keep our cars, but they have to take care of this stupid design flaw?

im game if someone wants to help.

we can start by getting all the complaints and issues together across the country, owners info, what year Q etc and set up a petition.

hell, cops are now suing ford for crown victoria for bad design on their fuel tanks and we all know about the flawed design of old checy trucks. and firestone and their suvs. if we dont let infiniti know, how are they gonna help us?

lets do this.

Well,

Some have mentioned this before, but NHTB recalls are always about safety issues, not reliabilty issues...:(

Either way fixing teh guide issue is still cheaper than doing the belts again and again on a LS400.

Nissan finally did the recall on the injectors for 85-89 Maximas and 84-89 Z cars because a bunch of them fried. This problem also occured on the early 90's maximas too, my mechanic in LA says he's done LOTS of 90-93 maximas too, so this is a big problem for them.

For what it is worth, my dad has a 92 and has a friend that was the owner of Infiniti of Ventura and the service writer, who is VERY good with these cars thinks it is a wives tale also.

Luckily this complacency is on its way out the door even among dealers.

Are you close to El Segundo?

Daedalus is there and he does chain guides.

I am not real familair w/ CA geography but I surmised El Segundo is in South CA (from the name).

daedalus is one of our online NICO mechanics, had done a few chain guide jobs.

I'm in So Cal, just south of LAX. Not real close to the HH, but not real far either.

85k isn't a whole lot of miles, but the age of the guides is what worries me. I've never had enough statistical data to get a good feel for when the guides tend to fail, but overall, it really seems that there is a large deviation across average failure lifespan. I've read of a failure at 47k, and I've seen guides completely intact at 182k on DougQ45's vehicle. I've always wanted to make a post to find out more, and I think I will now.

I am used to having to drive hundreds of miles to find someone who is competent to do this work for a reasonable price.(Others have driven even further than I have)

If I had a first Gen Q and someone like daedalus offered me a chance to get the guides done locally, I'd jump on it.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Fred! LAQ, The job typically takes 2-3 days, including 24 hours for the RTV to cure. I am not an ASE-certified mechanic, but I am a legal business and I am working on becoming completely compliant with all state and city automotive business licensing requirements. Several more hoops to jump through; I just started the process in January. I do offer several warranties on my work, which I will email to you now, and which will be stated on the Statement of Work (SOW) for the job. Lemme know if you need this or anything else done.

I'd kiss the ground you walk on if you convince them to issue a recall! :D

If you're dealer is insisting that the guides are okay, tell them to put their money where their mouth (mouths?) is. Put your foot down and demand that they either do the chain guide job for you or write up a warranty guaranteeing that the guides are/will be good. That outta change their stance pretty quickly.

LAQ: I have the pleasure to state first hand Deadalus is an absolute top notch Q repairmen. We tackled a problem Q before, and the result was excellent. If you look at his engine bay of his personal Q, please notice you could prepare food on it ---as it is so clean!! You will not find a more fanatical Q person west of the Mississippi (in due respect to Q45tech). Go see the man and get your guides done as you want to preserve such a nice car. Doug

P.S. Get the oil pump chain, and tensioner replaced while you are in there, and also have the radiator cleaned out **IF** you pull it.

Just drove through there last Saturday! (learning my way around LA area)

Saw 4-5 Q45s in a quick drive around Rancho Palos Verdes area (very swanky, like Monterry peninsula). Actually saw a bunch of older, well maintained lux cars. Gotta love that old money.
