I recently recieved an oil change from the dealer on a new car sale. Upon driving i noticed that there was a cloud of black and white smoked that came out of my exhaust. As i go to pull over on the highway to inspect what just happened my car started to sputter and then all unsudden my car died on me. There was oil everywhere. Rear windshield all over the ground and none left on the dipstick. I got towed to the nearest dealer and they said my drain plug fell off due to improper maintence. Long story short car was towed down to original dealer and they stated engine is fine not even a day later but they replaced the catalytic converter and the heat shield.
I don't feel comfortable with this fix and I have a Bad feeling that later on down the road something else will go wrong.. and i getting shafted.?
Thank you for any advise

oil leaked out, and onto the exhaust pipe and started to smoke, and splatter.

they didnt tighten your oil drain plug. it loosened up, and leaked all your oil out. time for a new engine. your engine dumped the oil out, and ran dry. you have a shot engine.

not good enough. your engine has lost its lifespan.

you need to threaten to sue, and contact corporate. this is a serious issue.

thank you so much for the assistance. I contacted Nissan and the reginal office will contact me later. I forgot to mention that the entire cabin filled with smoke and i had to open all doors and the sun roof to get the smoke out. But before it died... (talking about the sputtering) the entire car started to shake it was like going up a roller coaster ride that heavy vibrating feeling and the jerking. I am the least car savvy person but i still know this is not a good thing for the engine. Again I thank you for your help :)

my pleasure, and thank you very much for joining NICOclub.com! welcome aboard(sorry we had to meet on these terms lol)

you just described the exact feeling, that a seizing engine will do: the stuttering, puttering, hard to accelerate, etc.
and the smoke is due to the oil splashing on the hot exhaust, and creating a ton of smoke.

you should also mention that you had a serious loss of power, the engine wouldn't respond to your throttle input, and that the car was slowly beginning to bog-down. (you might not have noticed it, but that WAS happening)

Unfortunatly lol. But this is a great site and alot of info.

Yes the engine lost all power and no throttle what so ever. I basicaly coasted to a stop. Makes sense regarding the oil on the exhaust.

I emailed the top boss of the company with all this info. Thank you again

please let us know how this turn out. this is actually a common problem. an oil change is the easiest thing to do on a car, so they hire grease monkeys at $10/hour to 'start out' in a company. sometimes those potheads are empty headed and forget to either put the plug on right, refill the engine with oil, or to screw on the filter, or to make sure the filter gasket came off with the older filter(before screwing on a new filter & gasket creating a leak that will happen 15mins down the road).

Because you state you don't know much about cars I would use that to your advantage and ask:
"What tests do you run to determine that the engine did not suffer permanent damage from running out of oil?"
and
"Is there potentially permanent damage that your tests could not diagnose? If so what are the possibilities?"

Without the proper training and equipment you can't perform many tests yourself (and lets face it, this is a warranty problem so you should not have to) however you can logically ask that question because it's just common sense. They should be able to explain in terms you understand what they have done to determine if there are any problems and what the best course of action is.

Then take their explanation and talk to a trusted mechanic or another Nissan dealership. I always think when dealing with people the best approach is to be calm and honest even if you want to rip their head off for ruining your car :)

i would just call another dealer, and tell them that you own a rogue, and just had your oil changed at a quick-lube joint, and tell them the exact story. see what they say ;)

then tell corporate thats what you did, and the head shop foreman told you that the damage is serious.

That's a good idea ImStricken! Even better would be to write an email to another nissan dealer saying all that and hopefully they reply that the engine is done. (if the dealer is smart they will just say we need to see it) Then you would have it in writing from an official Nissan email.
