I left my 2000 XTerra in to have the timing belt/water pump/tensioner and other stuff replaced. After getting it back and on my way home the car just died - lost all power as I was driving down the road. I had driven about 8 miles after picking it up including stopping for 3 hours to play soccer.

I got towed back to where I had the work done and both the tow truck driver and my mechanic (they don't know each other) both agree that its the security system. I can use the remote to lock and unlock the car but the alarm does not "chirp" on when I lock it. It always used to. Lights work but radio doesn't. Power Windows don't work either.

All fuses appear to be ok. Battery is fine.

When you turn the key in the ignition - nothing happens. Its dead !!

Any ideas on what the problem is. My mechanic is stumped.

Are the battery cables tight? Are the keys still registered with the NATS alarm system?

Have the battery tested. Also check the condition of the cables all the way down to the starter.

you sure you didn't blow the big 80 amp window style fuse under the hood? Its in the fuses on the passenger side fender well and is what distributes power to everything through the ignition switch. They blow pretty easily if some wire is loose or arcing. peace.

Here's some images that might help our fellow Xterra owner (and of course to support Nismopu's statement). This is a very likely item. Fuse is worth around $20.00 the last time I checked and should be available from most parts stores.

First: Location of the Junction Block under the hood of all 2000-2004 Xterra's (and 1998-2004 Frontiers).

Then we have the actual cover of the Junction Block complete with ratings and locations of each fuse and relay.

And then we have the entire fuse and relay layout. The 80Amp fuse you need to check is marked here in green. I am willing to bet that Nismopu is right about that fuse.

Good idea. Tried the second key but no luck. Thanks for the idea though.

Thanks for all the help. Turned out it was the 40amp fuse inthe same area. Whn we replaced the fuse though it blew again immediately. We were able to id a wire that was bare and arcing which was causing the fuse to burn out.

Again Thx

They are images from under the hood of my Xterra. That's the kind of stuff you get when you have good SLR digital camera.

You took that from under your hood? Wow -- that camera must be amazing.
