Guys, here's the deal:
The digital speedo is a separate electronic unit in the cluster. It drives the digital display, HUD projector, and the odometer. Seems to have some design flaw that causes it to crap out for many people. Frequenty it is also affected by temperature - that is, when its cold it won't work, but as it warms up due to use, it starts working! I pulled my digital cluster and troubleshooted (troubleshot?!) it trying to figure out which component was causing this. I was not successful. Maybe some PhD genius could solve it, but without detailed wiring diagrams....
Anyway, if your's has died or is dying, replacement with new seems to be the best (only?) solution. Don't replace the whole cluster, all you need is the speedometer controller. Its very easy to remove this component from the cluster. I understand its about $200 or $250 from better Nissan dealers. I switched to analog. (PS - if you switch, you'll need the cluster wiring sub-harness as the plugs on the back of the cluster are different between analog/digital).
