Im trying to diagnose a dead miss on the #1 cylinder. Car is a 95 S14 with a 93 black top SR20DET, completely stock motor, usual bolt ons (FMIC, BOV, boost controller). I am no a SR guy, i own a CA18DET, but this came into the shop, so im giving it a go....

So far i have ruled out the coils, i can swap any one of them into #1 and nothing changes. Disconnect any other coil and it gets worse. Coil plug is getting power, ground and signal. Same goes with the injector. I swapped in a known good injector (from a KA24DE) and no change. Again, plug is getting power and signal. You can unplug either the coil or the injector on #1 and the car doesnt change at all.

I made a boost leak detector out of a piece of rubber and a pvc end cap with a valve stem in the middle, and can check for leaks under pressure (which would also show vacuum leaks at idle), and the intake is not leaking. There is a rubber vacuum hose that looks like it goes to the IAC (between the upper and lower intake manifolds) that is leaking, but i seriously doubt that would cause a dead miss on just 1 cylinder.

Ive pulled the valve cover and checked the valve clearances on both the intake and exhaust valves for the #1 cylinder, and they are fine. There is no valve train noise to suggest a bent or sticking valve.

Compression check on #1 came up with 125 psi, which is decent. The car is definately burning oil, lots of white smoke while idling, almost like a turbo seal is blown.

So given the compression, the fact that the coil and the injectors are working properly, and there are no vacuum leaks at the intake manifold, what could be going on here?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Jason

Rig up a spark plug wire the #1 coil and a spark plug and physically look for spark.

the 240sx ka24de injector is a 270cc and stock sr is 370cc. And compression of 125 psi is pretty low for the sr. FSM says like 160. Maybe a blown head gasket if you have all the white smoke.

bad wire(s) on the igniter...mine had a loose wire and it backed out just far enough to cause the missing. It is just a suggestion

is the igniter wire what connects to the coil?

The igniter if I understand correctly diverts the extra voltage away from the ecu so it don't fry...I assume it is attached in some way to the ignition coils and cas, since they are all ignition related...all I know for sure is that if it isn't wired right = no spark, and if one of the wires backs out of the plug = no spark on that cylinder
