I took my dad's car to go to the pharmacy yesterday(he has an 07' Altima)and when I turned on the car a display came up showing the key half full. I called the dealer and said that the battery on the key needed replacement.

Just to see if this has happened to anyone else.

I don't think so because there doesn't seem to be any port to charge.

No, the keyfob takes a standard non-rechargeable lithium battery. There is no charging point in the slot for it in the dash.

However, even with the battery dead, your fob should still start the car if it is inserted into this slot (don't ask me how Nissan did that!). The lithium battery is not expensive at all to replace, and I do believe that there are instructions in the user manual for replacing it.

Pull key out of the fab, stick a small flat head screwdriver in the seem and split in half, change battery, snap back together!

The LCD display is only an ICON as far as I know. It does not really show remaining power. Replace the battery in the ikey when convenient with a CR2032 and the icon will go away. Tip: Remember to note which side is up.

Also, the port in the car is not used for charging. It is really an RFID reader to allow the car to start if the ikey battery too low.

I made this a while ago. It maybe helpful. If our moderators would have taken the time to put this in the DIY section it might be easier to find.

I will email some of them so maybe they can start doing there job.

Induction. It's the same principle that RFID tags and security badges use to power their radio transmitters. Basically, you put the unit close enough to a strong enough radio source and an electric current will be induced into a loop of copper wire in the keyfob, providing enough power for the transmitter to send a weak signal back to the receiver in the slot.

It's nifty stuff.

My car is 6 months old and I'm already getting the warning display from both my fobs. Isn't this a little soon?

If it is do you think this is something a dealer would be able to change out for me? I can do it but I don't think I should have to pay to do it, when the car is less than a year old.

you cheap a$$, just go to the store and spend 3 bucks on a double pack of batteries. i mean you bought a 30k car and you cant afford batteries? doesnt sound like you will be doing any mods till you find a few a/c's at pick n pull you can get parts from...

Well if its $3 I can do. I didn't know it was a standard battery. Oh and I got my car on a Internet special, it was only $19,500(which is probably why the batteries in the fob suck and the passenger seat reclining plastic part was missing. Oh, by the way I called and had the dealer ship that to me. It was probably a $1.50 part).

And no, I won't be doing any mods because the few hours I work a week around studying can pay just enough for my annual contribution to my Coverdell, pay for my insurance premium(I'm 17... its high), and gas. The left overs go to my credit union to put back what my car took out.

Sorry I'm a cheap a$$.edit: had 16, forgot I just turned 17
